Stunning is a good word to descibe Chuck's porter. Magnificent, incredible and outstanding are a few more words that came to mind while looking at the pictures. Great job Chuck and thanks for the pictures Marc.

Thanks Marc for posting the pictures of that model. While I wouldn't know the difference between a Porter and a Shay I certainly know when I have seen a magnificent model. Great work Chuck.

All, Thanks for the comments. Thank you Marc, for posting the message and the pictures on the website too!
I have to give Cliff Grandt full credit for making such a beautiful kit. I can’t imagine how many hours he must have spent researching and cutting the molds. The cast-in lettering he did is spectacular! His parts make the job easy! However, since Cliff was famous for his excellent-running Micro-Mo drives, I’m not sure if he would have approved of my building a static model!

It does look great Chuck. So if someone wanted to build a powered version how difficult a task do you feel that would be.

Joe, Cliff designed it to run, so it's mostly a matter of getting a powered version. It originally was offered with the Micro-Mo motor (Swiss gearmotor). Current versions may have a cheaper open frame motor, but I'm not positive about that. I hear they can be a bit fiddily to get just right, but I have seen several built-up examples that ran great, so it can be done.
The Guru of Grandt Porters is Jerry Kitts over at Foothil Model Works. He would be THE source for info and he also has brass Porter parts that may be available.

That's really terrific modeling, Chuck. I have to go back and look at it some more. Wasn't Cliff a huge fan of Porters?

Marc, Thanks for posting the link. I like that Chuck gave a description of what he did. A great website.
Chuck, You have built a beautiful model. The kit may be a good one but your touches have made it into an exceptional model. Thanks for sharing.

Here is a picture of the Porter in it’s native (miniature) habitat. I left it as an attachment due to it’s size:

A while back I sent the above picture to Jerry Kitts of Foothill Models, a noted Porter authority. He immediately took me to task (nicely, though) by asking how the brass builders plate could rust. AARRGH! So, I got out some books and cruised the internet looking for builders plate photos. Marc Ruesser chimed in and suggested a plate that had been painted over with black, with just a touch of brass showing. Since it’s hard to get a purely metallic color to look right at this size, I decided that the painted over look would work. I took some Polly Scale Black and gave both plates a wash to darken them. Then I used a Gold colored pencil to lightly highlight the top of the lettering. I finished with a bit of Bragdon powders to dull them. The Gold is subtle, and can be seen only in the right light. Here is a close-up that shows the result:

Anyway, the bottom line is that by sharing an E-photo, I was able to make a more accurate model, even if it meant getting my ears pinned back a little (grin). Russ Reinberg wrote an editorial about the benefits of E-sharing in the latest Finescale Railroader. Those of us on the Forum already know how valuable sharing can be. Thanks, Jerry and Marc, and thanks to the Forum Moderators who provide us with a great place to share!

Excellent solution, Chuck! That info about the builder's plates is something I'm going to remember.
I read Uncle Russ' editorial a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn't agree more! I know my own modeling has improved substantially because of emails, PM's, and the exchange of info and photos on this forum.
