Spring has reached the Northern Hemisphere, and for many of us that means model building and train layouts will take a secondary role as yard work and other outdoor activities move to the forefront of our lives. So Challenge 5 is going to take a slightly different approach from earlier Challenges.
Instead of one big many months-long project, you can choose from a variety of short-term projects. Or, if you still prefer one big one, that's still a possiblilty. Welcome to the "Two-Credit Cafeteria!"
Here's how it works: Simply choose any combination of projects from the "menu" below to add up to two credits. Most individual projects are worth 1 credit; a few others are worth 2 credits. Complete your selected project(s) as you have time throughout the spring months. The only catch is you have to have them all finished to receive credit by Thursday, June 30, which is a little under 90 days from now.
Two-Credit Cafeteria Menu
1. Paint, letter, and (super)detail 3 revenue cars or 1 loco. 1 credit
2. Build and detail a lineside industry (or series of small lineside industries) to occupy an area approximately (scale) 130' L by 90' W. This can be a stand-alone diorama or an area on your layout. 2 credits
3. Scratchbuild a non-revenue car, any era, scale/gauge, from styrene, wood, or resin. 1 credit for the basic car (including lettering/numbering), 1 additional credit for complete undercarriage and topside detailing
4. Finish an orphaned project you started and then abandoned. 1 credit
5. Create your own detail parts (drums, barrels, boxes, etc.) from Sculpey clay or other material of your choice. A minimum of 10 detail parts to qualify. 1 credit
6. Use Mic Greenberg's "3-Evening Projects" or "Tips Sheets" to build your own tool box, saw horses, fuel stand, concrete foundation/ramp, or windows for use in detailing or other scratchbuilding projects. 1 credit
7. Select 1 structure from the Prototype Structures photo threads (http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4647 and http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5840) and kitbash, scratchbash, or scratchbuild it. 2 credits
8. Create a mini-scene and populate it with LBP's for a larger diorama or layout. 1 credit
9. Design and build a fully operational, scenicked mini- or micro-layout (any scale). Post construction progress photos and updates to both this thread and in the Mini-layout Forum. 2 credits
10. Build (on your layout or as a stand-alone diorama) a city or small-town block of off-line businesses. Detail the storefronts and windows, and populate with LBP's. At least 5 structures must be included on the "block." 2 credits
11. Finish any unfinished projects from earlier Challenges. 1 credit
12. If building a layout, start and finish (structures, track, scenery, ballast, wiring, etc.) an area equivalent to 1440 sq. inches (or 2.5' X 4', if you think in terms of modular construction). 2 credits
13. Build a small structure or rolling stock kit in a scale other than your usual scale for display on a wooden base or small diorama. 1 credit
14. And for those of you who like to do your own thing.... Make up your own project. State in detail what your goal is and commit to it. 1 credit
First, select your choice of project(s). Then let us know what you're going to try to accomplish between now and the end of June. Post periodic updates and photos as you move along with your project(s).
Although you may start any time you wish, Challenge 5 opens today, April 4, and runs through June 30. Have fun!

Jeez I'm exhausted from reading all that! I think I will go with #14. My goal is to go fishing (but not catch anything so I won't have to clean it ) , will I need to post a pic of the creek?

WOW! What a plethora of perfectly planned projects. I can see several projects that I could seriously get into. But I'm not going to commit myself right now as I'm neck deep in the MR depot kitbashing contest. So, if the rules permit, let me see where I am after I get everything off to MR. Otherwise, if not this one, I'll catch the next one. Thanks for a great selection.

Decisions, decisions! I don’t know where to go!?
I should go with number 11 and finish the Passenger Station Diorama which is actually within sight. I also have the beginnings of another diorama that my son and I started a while back based on farm house. We have the foam in place, the roadbed and track down. The track is even weathered. That would fall under number 4.
But I really want to finally do something with the coal fired power plant that I have. I have the foam cut and ready for it. This would be number 2 or it could be made to fit under number 9. Then there is the Pinky’ Place and a few other town structures I have begging for a place to go and would fulfill number 10.
What to do? What to do?

Let's see , I'll do # 4 , no, no #6 .....but I like 12 too . This calls for the scientific approach ....print out the list , hang it on the wall and throw a dart .....oops I hit the dog . The challenge will be deciding what challenge I want to do .
Looks like fun ,

Steve, you can start whenever you're ready. Even on June 30, if you think you can finish it all that day.

Thanks, Mike. June 30, h-m-m-m. Lessee, I assembled and/or painted and weathered ten freight cars over a weekend, so maybe I can upgrade a bunch of my Blue Box kits from 20, 30 years ago with new wheels, grabs, steps, roofwalks, etc. for #1. But then I've got a great idea for my BTS Willit's Supply, so that would be #2. But then, then, there's my river/camp mini-scene for #8. Or I could finish off the town of Moxley for #12. Or . . . or. . .or. . .
Oh well, I'll decide when I get there on June 1. Seriously, I think having the variety is great.

Choices? No, not choices!
Actually, Mike, I think that the idea is masterful and should draw a lot of participants.
Now, just give me a little time to think about this one.

This is a great idea MikeC. Lets see 1,2,5 ,7,10 or 14 what do I do? Well I have a strip of businesses to do that go behind the industrial area in downtown Gwenville. I will go with no. 10. I will post a picture of the area later. There is room for five businesses.

OK I think I got this figured. I am going to go for number 11 and finish the Passenger Station Diorama from C-2 and C-4. All new updates will be posted here. 1 credit.
The second part of this will number 4. The project chosen (in the interest of family harmony) is what I will call Kyle’s Farm House Diorama. I’ll have more detailed information on this later. I actually have some construction photos to also post later. 1 credit.
There I done doed it for now!

Mike ,
Does it mean if I make two of Mic's toolboxes I get two credits ? I reckon I could just about manage that , just . Though it is going to be tight . Still , I think I'm up to the challenge .

Choices, so many choices. Since I am leaving on another mini vacation I have printed out the rules and will study them and decide by Sunday. Of course that means I am loosing valuable time while making my decision.
I would love to scratch build the structure I found on the school property but I am not sure if I want to start something new. I have so many unfinished projects that I should narrow my choice to something that is already on the drawing board.
Well I will have plenty to keep busy reading and deciding while I am away.

Expand your horizons, young Mr. Nick! Why limit yourself to two toolboxes? Build three..... and then throw a in couple of scratchbuilt windows for good measure! I think you can handle it. But if you want a real challenge, go for the cast concrete foundation. In fact, make it for a 9-stall roundhouse while you're at it.....

Jeez...no wonder you call it a challenge
Well...let's see...I'm doing a number 4... which is actually a number 10...which really has three threads going for it already on here...which means I would have to stop on this one...which would make it a number 4 again...
Hey...you guys have fun. I'll keep you posted else where...unless I change my mind
Great challenge MikeC Should make for some very diverse modeling.

I've been looking foreward to C5 . I discovered this forum too late to jump into C4. I would like to complete option 7. Specifically the small gas station "anbhurst" posted December 2003. Gas stations are a favorite of mine. This will give me a "good" excuse to build one and also drive down to Portland over the next couple months.
