JackP wrote ""Joe, regarding your post 10-02-2004, this is a little late, but I had it filed in the computer memory between my ears and I found it today. 0n April 24, 1980 Conrail officially assumed operations of the (Raritan River)railroad, though the Raritan's locomotive fleet, which consisted solely of six SW900's (RR 1-6), had been included in the Conrail roster and renumbering since Conrail's renumbering of April 9, 1976. (Conrail merged on April 1, but the roster did not take affect until April 9!) The six switchers carried the Conrail numbers 8658-8663 and were immediately renumbered as soon as Conrail took official control. Unfotunately, most if not all of the Raritan switchers entered storage around 1981, though I do not have exact years. xRR8661 (former RR 4) sits here in the Rutherford dead line awaiting disposition. Use search engine for: Conrail Cyclopedia EMD SW9/SW900: Photos I think the paint job says a lot more than just Conrail! Location: Rutherford, PA 1984 Photo Online: May 27, 1998""
Hi all, Thought this deserved a new thread.
JackP, excelent find! Here is the link for those who don't like search engines: http://crcyc.railfan.net/locos/emd/sw900/sw9.html
Its a shame, RailFan.net has a ton of information available, but its always so hard to find. I frequently search for the RRRR up there, but rarely get any good hits. Railfan.net is also the same site I found the RRRR Caboose info listed.
Seems like the photos were taken in 1984, and the location is just outside of Harrisburg. Anyone know why? Was there a scap yard there? IS that where Conrail put all their engines to die?
