It's January 2 and time for a new Challenge!

In theme and time frame, Challenge 4 will be somewhat different from the first 3 Challenges. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, will be to pick some unfinished project that you have let languish on your workbench or layout for eons and complete it. So what's the challenge? You have only 90 days to get it completed. But, HEY! That's okay! You've only had months or perhaps even years to get it finished. 90 days should pose no problem! Right?

So here are the guidelines. First, post a photo or two of your project's current state or level of completion. Then post regular updates and progress photos as you work your way toward finally completing the monster!

We won't count today, because you may need the whole day to dig through the pile of "stuff" that's accumulated on your workbench or layout and find the project. And then you may need this evening just to figure out where you left off and remember why you gave up on it in the first place. But come tomorrow.... let 'er begin!

So, the deadline for completion is Saturday, April 2. That's 90 days from now. So hop to it! The clock starts ticking at midnight tonight!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm a busy man. I have a railroad to run.

Count me in on Challenge 4 Mike as I will continue with the Hulett project as pictured on the Challenge 3 thread .

We should see a good turnout of members on this Challenge as most of us have unfinished projects lurking about .

Good Luck to All .

Hmmmm, does a small piece of sceniced stryrofoam to be used as a structure base count as the start of an unfinished project? The rest of the project is still in my head...

I am thinking (yes I know the trouble that brings)maybe might be time to get working on the Challenge 2/Passenger Station Diroama again. Maybe I can finish everything but the bridges this time around.

I'm not the say-so here Dan , but your project ( such that it is ) sounds fine to me . You could always take the initial photo of your head to show the ' thought process '

Well, let's see... I've always thought of a diorama as a project... and the base and scenery are always part of a good diorama... so I don't know why it couldn't count.

Besides, you're the only one who knows how much constuction has already taken place in your head... Yep, you'd better join in.

Hmm, the temptation is to complete Challenge 3 and count it for Challenge 4 as well. However, since Mike has left Challenge 3 unlocked, I will just add progress photos there(assuming that there is progress to document).

So, how is this idea? Back on November 5, 2003, I started a thread about completing the scenery around my Roundhouse on the layout. The picture that I posted at the beginning of the thread was this one.

At that time I said: "I've decided that the next area of the layout to get detailed is the right side of this Walther's roundhouse. You can get an idea from the photo of what surrounds it and how much room is available. I am open to (and actually begging for) ideas on what to put along this side of the roundhouse. The far side has two sidings, one with an inspection pit installed. Clutter, junk, supplies, small sheds? What do you think? Specific details and their sources would be helpful!"

I made the last post in this thread on January 13, 2004, which included this photo.

And that is where it sits today.

I propose to complete the scenery and detailing on the right side of the Roundhouse as I began to do over a year ago. It will include the construction of a structure or two, as well as adding the final scenery and detail items to this part of the layout.

So, what do you think? Does this project qualify? Does 14 months of non-completion fit the definition of "languishing"?

I have finally chosen a project that should and will be finished.
I started the Hook, Line, and Sinker which is a structure found on the Franklin and South Manchester by George Sellios.
A few years ago Jim Mooney posted plans(since removed at George's request) for this structure on the fsm Yahoo Group.
Here is what the structure looks like on the F&SM layout.

Since I have not worked on this scratch build for the past 2 or more years I am not sure what my intentions were for the structure then.
I now plan to make this into a dockside restaurant with the owner and his family living on the second and third floors.

The first picture is of the front side of the structure.

The next picture is of the back side.
The dining portion of the restaurant is only the one story part with the kitchen occupying the first floor below the owners residence.

I started on one part of the roof for the restaurant.
The cardstock under the metal roofing is too thin and has warped.

There is a small storage shed that will be added to the kitchen end.
It has been cut out but not glued on.

So now I will have to possibly change out some windows and doors, correct a few problems, add a deck to the second floor door, scratch build the dock, find some signage and details and who knows what else can be completed by the day after April Fools Day.

This could be also called the 'no-excuses' challenge. I will 'try' to finish something in the timeframe allowed.

Alright, so here's the small wedge of scenic base I was refering to. It started out as a trial for future scenery applications, but was also cut as a piece to bed a small structure on in the the front of my layout ( as can be seen in the second picture). I've been busy down the other end of the layout with the woods and the mill, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to work on the 'naked' end of the layout. Now if you go back to the first picture, squint at it, and imagine a small hardware supply, on high stumps, with some sort of junky work area underneath and around the back...... Unfortunately I don't work off of plans. This is a hobby after all and I prefer to use my imagination a bit. Too much planning actually starts to sound like work again...

Mike, the only kit I have started and never finished is my SRMW Diesel/CarShop kit. I don't think I can finish it in 90 days. I do have the Cranberry Warehouse that I am currently working on about half finished. Does this count?

Rick, I'm going to dig out my SRMW Lamson & Goodnow, which is only about 40%-50% complete and try to get it finished in 90 days (actually it will be about 80 or 85 days by the time I get started!). Why don't you see if you can get the SRMW Diesel Shop finished? Of course, the choice is yours, so if you'd rather work on the Cranberry Warehouse for your Challenge project, have at it. Just remember to post your progress updates to this thread, though.
