I am the proud owner of one of the 20 special edition 2004 NGC kits Art has produced of the Idaho Hotel. This was the first kit by Bar Mills and Art does apologize for it's ancient ways. I think that may be just fine with me as many of the craftsman kits today are no more than "assemble and weather" jobs. I will do my best to show this kit the respect it deserves! So, on with the show.
The dream catcher.

First off, it comes in a wooden box with a sliding top.

There are lots of parts - looks like real fun stuff.
The roof is a cardboard printing of corrogated metal, weathered to a tee. Well, we'll see. . .

Wow, look at the details in the up-side-down railings.

A few castings along with a trusty check-off list

And even a provision of the occasional emergency

Looks like a greate kit, except for that cardboard roof, I would probably change that with 'the real thing'. Looking forward to follow you progress.

I was a little surprised when I read the instructions and found that they were a substitute (read replacement) for the original which were metal.

Elliot,
I just spoke to Artie and he wanted me to post the following.
The substitution was made due to the time constraints of getting the kit ready for the convention. He did not have any of the Cambell metal roofing so he substituted the Paper Creek stuff. He did this since many people have said how much they like the stuff. If you would like to get the real metal material, just let Artie know and he will send out the actual Cambell stuff after he gets back from the convention. This holds true for anyone who bought one of this 20 kit run.

Don't get me wrong - I love the kit. I can use my imagination on the roof, thank you!

Elliott, that looks like a great kit. I look forward to seeing your progress photos also.
BTW, I have heard good things about the Paper Creek shingles.

I also would consider at least experimenting with the Paper Creek roofing.
Some people have tried cutting the roofing into individual panels darkening the edges with a black Sharpie and over lapping as you would with the Campbell product.
Let us know how you do.

Elliott, this looks like a fun project, and I look forward to your progress updates. I'm one of those who has been really interested in the various Paper Creek products, so I'll also be interested in any comments you have about the corrugated roofing sheets if you decide to use them.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm a busy man. I have a railroad to run.

Looks like a very nice kit. Is Saco River Structures a special edition series from Bar Mills that will be added to in the future?

Thanks for posting the pixs Elliott. I too got my kit yesterday. I was also wondering about the "Saco River Structures" name on the box Rick. I also had a bad first impression regarding the Paper Creek stuff, but am now glad to hear some favorable comments on it. I will give it a try but I think I'll take Frank up on the offer of getting the Campbell product from Art.
Elliott, when are you planning to start?

And, away we go first step is to color the base which is made to resemble a wood foundation and assemble the thing. Here are top and bottom after assembly with top piece glued in place

and, of course, the walls are weathered using the grey primer and stencil brush using the dry brush technique. I used delta white . First time I did it this way and I think it will be attractive, especially when all the balconies and windows are attached. I am contemplating using delta light victorian teal for the trim?

Elliott it looks as if you've made a good start on this project. How large is the overall structure? I think the teal will be great as long as it is weathered like the rest of the building. Is there any texture to the paper creek roofing or is it a flat piece of cardboard?
