Okay guys, it's here: Challenge 3!
The theme for Challenge 3 will be Modeling the Prototype, and your task will be to create a model of your favorite prototype or railfan scene. The picture can be one from your personal collection, or it can be one from a magazine, book, or online source.
Here are the rules:
1. Your modeled scene can be in any scale and gauge.
2. It can be a stand-alone diorama or a mini-scene on your layout/module.
3. The good news is that it does not have to be a rivet-for-rivet and twig-by-leaf duplicate of your picture.
4. The bad news is that it should be close enough to recognize the overall scene in the picture. That means rocks and trees and vehicles and whatever else can be seen in the picture should be included in your project.
5. Lineside industry, offline industry, rolling stock, yard facilites, locos, enginehouse, passenger platform, a spindley trestle, Horseshoe Curve , Diablo Canyon Bridge ... whatever turns you on.
6. The only catch is that you have to post a photo or scan of the picture that inspired your modeled scene as well as a photo of your finished model. Progress photos and updates along the way are, of course, more than welcome.
NOTE: If you posted a photo of your proposed project in the "Heads Up" thread, please repost it here when you begin actual construction on your project.
And as previously announced....
As many of you already know, Karl Fasolino ("Wrongsideofthetracks") is the owner of Surrey Custom Models and Alder Models. Karl has very generously and graciously offered to award prizes to three lucky participants in Challenge 3!
The prizes will be awarded in a random drawing from the names of the Challenge 3 participants. To be eligible for the drawing, you must have started your Challenge project between July 1 and September 1 and must have it finished or still be actively working on it by December 20. I'll twist Joe's arm to do the drawing , and Karl will mail the prizes directly to the lucky individuals whose names are drawn.
Here are the prizes Karl will award: 1. A selection of packaged SCM metal detail castings. 2. One SCM laser-cut billboard kit and a selection of SCM metal detail castings. 3. One "Leon's Freight Building" Add-on Kit and a selection of SCM metal detail castings.
Each of the prizes has an approximate retail value of $15.
So get out your photos, magnifiers, calipers, and X-Actos and get started planning and building. Not only will you have an excellent model at the finish, but you might also have some really nice detail parts to add to it. And just in time for Christmas!
The Challenge 3 period runs from July 1 - December 31.

Well, I have been sitting pool-side in Aruba with sketchpad in hand, planning out the model and how it will be situated on the layout. (That has actually been a topic of conversation from fellow vacationers.) Although some things have fallen into place, I will need to review my pictues of the Butler Coal & Oil Company to finalize my plans. It gives me something to look forward to when returning to the real world from "paradise".

Bruce have a couple of strawberry daquiris for me but please lie to me and tell me they were awful so I don't feel to bad.
Mike I think it is very generous of Karl to offer the prizes and am wondering how about a vote at the end and the three top vote getters get the prizes or is the way above the way Karl wanted to distribute them?Pat

Pat, it's the way Karl and I agreed the prizes would be given out. I do not want the Challenge projects to become a contest. That was never the intent of the "challenge" when I started the idea last summer. The only aspect of a "contest" in the challenge is between the individual modeler and the calendar. The real goal, of course, is to improve one's skills and techniques as a model builder while working against a set of "rules" or "standards" within a specific time frame.
Bruce, it's a tough life! Are you sure you can handle a whole week of Aruba?

As a matter of coincidence, I was thumbing through an old RMC this morning and happened to notice a couple of photographs that, at first glance, appeared to be identical. When I read the caption, I realized that Stafford Swain had essentially completed the Challenge 3 project... about 23 years ahead of time!
He scratchbuilt a CNR coal dock/tower from photographs - one of which had a CNR 4-6-0 posed in front of it. After Stafford completed his model, he lettered, numbered, and even weathered a Van Hobbies brass 4-6-0 to look just like the prototype. Then he posed it in front of the coal dock and set his camera at an angle that was virtually identical to the camera angle of the proto photo. It's really interesting to study the two.
I won't have access to a scanner until sometime next week, but if anyone keeps old RMC's (like I do ), the photos and article are in the March 1981 issue on pages 92-93.

Here are a few initial pictures of the Butler Coal & Oil Company that I want to model. The first two pictures were previously posted, but the oil tank picture is new. The tank sits right next to the incline up to the coal trestle, and I assume that tank cars were run up the incline to fill the rather large storage tank.

Judging by what you did in Challenge 2 , Bruce , I'm sure you'll do a fine job on that very interesting model. I used to live up in Mennonite Country near Kitchener Ont. and ther is a covered bridge up there that is similar to your picture ...brings back old memories .
I'm looking forward to seeing your progress . TERRY

This a picture I got off E-bay from a book someone was selling that I didn't win.

Also give me a reason to assemble one of my old Revell stage coaches I've bought off E-bay. Harold

Interesting project you've chosen, Bruce. It will be interesting to see it come to life. For the delivery system, they may have used gravity and delivered from the elevated track or it may be that there was a pump. If this is a place nearby that you can get more info, you might want to look for piping to some type of small structure that would hold the pump and valves. You could improvise and make up your own but I find it easier to copy what they really used rather than figure what might work. Lots of those old pipes are just cut off when equipment is removed. Just something to check if you get there again. Good hunting. Richard

Well there certainly have been some very interesting things that have been chosen for the next Challenge project. I will choose the cockeyed building since there are plenty of photographs of the structure thanks to Bruce(Dutchman) posted elsewhere on this forum. I plan to construct as if it was the day for it to be demolished and plan to have equipment there which will aid in the demolition. Also Elliott has started construction on his cockeyed building and maybe just maybe he will join in and finish his.. Here are a few pictures of the front of the many pictures Bruce posted of the building.

I'd better repost my project over here for a frame of reference .

The ship will be the Edmund Fitzgerald ( almost finished ) and I'll work on one of two Huletts that I'll need as well as the dock area , tracks etc. I'd like to have most of the Hulett done for the September 23 Steel Modellers meet in Philadelphia .I'll be taking progress pictures to the meet anyhow and may take the model itself depending on how far along I am .
Good luck to everyone in the Challenge and hope to see some new faces as well . Looks like fun !
