It's January 1st and time for a new Challenge!

Scratchbuild, kitbuild, or kitbash a passenger station in any scale, size, and era. Then, using it as a starting point, construct a completely detailed passenger terminal/station/platform scene. Detail and light the interior, if you wish. Or concentrate on the outside, if you prefer. Or do both. But your finished project must present a complete scene with passengers, baggage, freight, railway equipment, etc.

Note: You may not begin with a structure you have alreay finished. Everything must be built during the time frame mentioned below. hehe

You must also post periodic progress updates and photos (so that the rest of us will feel guilty and pressured to keep working ).

The Challenge will run from Jan 1, 04, to June 30, 04.

But wait! That's not all!

Back by popular demand! (Literally! ) The original "finescale" Challenge Project.

At the request of folks who felt they registered as RR-L members too late to start the original Challenge project, we will repeat it as an option. If you want to be involved with the Challenge thread, but don't want to build a passenger station, the same rules for the original challenge still apply: you must begin with a kit that is not normally considered "finescale" and using whatever means you have available, make it "finescale." (Refer to the original Challenge thread for all of the guidelines.) You will also have 6 months from January 1 to complete your project.

So, there it is, guys. I'm looking forward to seeing a number of really neat station scenes! Or something else completely. Whichever challenge you choose, you now have 6 months to complete it.

So let's get started!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm a busy man. I have a railroad to run.

I am the first one to make a post here?

I am getting ready to start my station kit and thought I would pass along some information about what I intend to try. The kit is a Model Power Station. I will be repainting the kit. I have not settled on the color scheme as of yet. I repaint all my plastic kits since I do not like the look of the colored plastic. I will also be making some additions and modifications to the kit by adding platforms and some other details.

I plan on making this station the passenger terminal for my amusement park. The station will be a union terminal of sorts. Passengers will disembark from the passengers trains and then transfer to trolleys to ride to and through the amusement park. Part of my modifications and additions will be to add the trolley platforms.

I will be constructing this scene as a module. This will be my first attempt at building a module also. I have most of the supplies to start the frame. I hope to pick up the lumber this weekend.

I have finally decided on a name for the amusement park: Castle Rock. Castle Rock was a real amusement park in the 1920s and 30s here in Delaware County. It was owned by the Philadelphia & West Chester Traction Company and located along their West Chester Pike Line near the Crum Creek. All traces of Castle Rock are gone today. The park was so utterly demolished there is a debate today where exactly the park was located. All traces of the park were removed and the area was allowed to naturalize for some 60 years before development came to the area. There is a housing development called Castle Rock that is built in the area deemed by most historians to be the location of the park. Since my fictitious RLK&T has a branch line that follows the Crum Creek Valley I figured that Castle Rock would be perfect for me. In my model railroad world the RLK&T enters into an agreement with the P&WCTC to bring passengers to the park and the P&WCTC transports them from the passenger terminal to the park.

Tom,

It certainly looks like you've got a plan! I will only be viewing other member's progress for a while before jumping in, since I want to finish some other projects before starting this one. (We'll see how long that lasts!)

Hi all
Tom I agree with Bruce you definitely have a workable plan.
I can not do a station since I have room for only one station on my layout and it is about 90 percent completed.
I will however try and finish this station and add details to it during the course of this thread.
It will give me a chance to take some more pictures of the station.
I want to do a general store/gas station for my Challenge project.
I was hoping to get a Magnusson General Store kit for this but as yet I have not found one on eBay.
I will probably scratch build one from plans that are posted on the fsm web site by Jim Mooney and incorporate some of the cockeyed building that Bruce posted in the "Structures that cry out to be Modeled" thread.
MadMike (Mike Lynch) from the fsm group who builds and sells dioramas just listed one on eBay that he built for sale.
I know that Karl has also built this General Store.
Here is a picture that Mike posted of his General Store for sale.
I will be using a Classic Miniatures "Work's Hardware" and a Muir Models "Nevada City Button Works" as the kits I will be kitbashing for this project.

Sounds good, guys.

Like Bruce, I need to finish a couple of other projects before I start on this one. I have Majestic Hardware about 75% completed, and I still have two worktrain cars to build. So, as with the first Challenge project, I'll be getting a late start again. But I'll be following everyone's progress in the meantime.

Everyone's plans seems to be coming together. I probably will not participate in this challenge. I am trying to complete the first 15 ft section of my layout and have three specific structures in mind. After railroad camp is complete, I want to build SW's Tank & Water shed, the Woodcutter's Shack and Cumbres & Toltec's coaling tower. I will be watching this thread with interest and am looking forward to you guys great structures and modeling.

I have most of what I need I think, apart from stair risers but I hae not put a plan to paper as yet. I may have to wing it somewhat, not having scratchbuilt before.

I know I'm in trouble cause I'm taking MikeC's advice! He once told me to expand my horizons (whatever they are ) by trying a different scale. Of course he was refering to trying a HO kit. I don't know why but I have never had any interest in HO. When I was a kid I had a S-scale American Flyer, when I got back into the hobby as an adult it was N-scale and now it's On30 that I'm thinking about trying. No, I'm not getting out of N, just thinking about dabbling in On30 also. I figured I could try my hand at a throw-away diorama for the Challenge. If it works out and I decide to try to build a small layout in On30 I will save the structure (if worth saving) and just toss the terrain. For the record I like HO, I just don't have any interest in modeling in that scale for some reason. Anyway I guess I'm in the same boat as Tom in that I'm going to try to turn a cheap kit into something worthwhile and it's also a passenger station (well, sorta ), kinda making the project a hybrid of both parts of the challenge. Here is a pic of the stock building from the maker (Ameri-Towne).

As you can see by the price on the box I'm cheating by starting off with this fine craftsman kit! The pic shows the parts dumped on the table with one of my N-scale locos this size is gonna take some getting used to! My line of thinking is that as time marched on and business grew the building became the agent's office, a covered platform with benches was built to one side for passengers with a freight shed on the other side. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! .

Hey, guys, I can tell this new Challenge project thread is going to be a goodie! I am truly looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

Tyson, I'm glad to see you're going to try On30. The idea of an On30 diorama or mini is really starting to appeal to me. (Think you can get Drew to try On30 also? )

Mike, Drew might just be having too much fun with the N scale stuff to want to switch!

Arghhhhh……….

Second day and I have already encountered a problem while I was trying to put my ideas on paper.

At first I had envisioned the trolley platform as being a stub. Since I grew up in suburban Philadelphia all my experiences with trolleys were from the Philadelphia Suburban Transit Co. (Red Arrow). PST is the name that the P&WCTC adopted after it had acquired the Philadelphia & Western interurban line. Well PST ran Brill liners which were double ended. As I was beginning to put my ideas on paper I realized that the trolley I had planned on using for this was a Bachmann single ended PCC.

Now here is my dilemma. If I want to use the PCC car which was a gift from my wife and daughter I will have to build a loop. I would like to investigate the possibility of adding a Brill liner or other Brill trolley and going with my original stub track idea. I have looked at Bachmann’s Brill trolleys and I think they look too toyish. The only other manufacturer I have found is Bowser which makes a Brill trolley kit.

Since I know that are quite a few traction enthusiasts on the Gauge I posted a question regarding Brill trolleys to help me decide what to do.

Tom,

I recently bought a Brill Trolley from IHC for the Xmas layout on my fireplace mantle. It runs great, but it does look toy-like. Here is their link.

Well, my first REAL decision on my first challenge project has come and gone. For the last month or so I've been trying to come up with a workable method of scratch-building windows, and I thought it would be real nice to have them able to be openned and closed. Well, I finally gave up in frustration . Perhaps if I'd been working in a larger scale (like maybe four times prototype size!) I could have kept all the sashes square and such, but I just couldn't make it happen, so off to Grandt Line I go. I'm sure it'll look better in the end anyway.

Tyson,

Maybe you should make that a station your trains can drive through!

If the door functioned it would be a snap!

Moving right along there was a extra blank sidewall and a extra sidewall with door and window. Forget the latter but decided to cut the first in half making the building 50% longer (also making the roof parts that came with the kit useless ). The ends of all the walls are notched according to the stone pattern (they were supposed to snap together but like most cheap kits nothing fits without alot of clean-up first ) so I now had two halfs with a straight edge on one side. I layed the mating wall over the edge then sprayed with some paint, then filed out the areas with no paint and suprised myself when it actually worked!!! Need to fill a few gaps with some plaster or spackling compound. Next will be to cut out the window on the left end so I can make a solid wood door for there.
