My Royal and Edisto RR is inspired by the real life Charleston & Western Carolina RR. Albert M. Langley, Jr wrote a great book on the railroad and it includes lots of photos of prototype equipment and structures. I really like this picture of the freight depot at Brunson SC where farmers would bring their crops. Vegetables and watermelons were staple cash crops and depots like this one were very busy in late summer. (Original photo by TG King, now in the collection of CK Marsh Jr)



An online search also turned up this photo taken much later but from the same vantage point. There is a power pole in the background of both photos.

With these as a guide I scratchbuilt a modified version for my layout. It is long enough to spot two freight cars, but only about half as wide as the original so it will fit my space. I tried to keep all the distinctive features like the brick pilings, the separated bays, the enclosed section, and the siding with the triangle shapes. Without accurate measurements I made some educated guesses as to dimensions.

The first step was to build the base on an HO scale 2íx2í grid that I created in Excel. I was running a little short on lumber so not all the joists are perfect but we're the only ones who will know.




These support structures separate the bays. They are 16' wide and will be 8í apart when installed.







This is the jig I made to attached the boards so they will be just above floor level

I tried something a little different (for me at least.) Instead of cutting the planking for the dock floor into scale lengths, I used my Chopper to score the long pieces of scale 2x10 lumber every 8 feet. Then weathered with a couple of different colors of Hunterline. This is big time saver. You can glue the planking in long pieces.




In the photo you can see where I left space in the top row for the main posts. Then I added them to the dock




On the right side there will be an enclosed section for merchandise that needs to be out of the weather and a small office.





Then I finished the dock planking. That's all for now

Not sure how I missed the beginning of this one, but I did, so I'll attribute it to high heat and very high humidity, which render me more useless than usual.

Very nice build here, and an interesting, not-often-seen subject!

Arnold,

I am fascinated by local and regional architecture. I like what I see you doing with your model, really capturing the appearance of the prototype. I suppose itís obvious, but why it is sectioned off by walls into bays? Did it separate produce by owner?

Good question Mike. I don't have a definitive answer but what I've heard from old-timers is that the divided bays served two purposes. Separate goods by owner as you said but also to separate different crops. I'd love to hear from other Forum members if they know differently.

In the photos above, the side closest to the camera is the truck side. It has extra dock space. The rail side sits closer to the tracks.

Finishing up the build....

Enclosed area with door, window and freight doors from Evergreen




Before installing the roof I made rafters from 2 x 6s and added them on 24' centers (more or less!)




The roof on the main section is rolled asphalt. I started with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper and brushed on 3 colors of weathering powders - grimey gray, ash and dust bowl.




I build a sub-roof of scale 2 x 12s and weathered them. Then I cut the sandpaper into scale 3' x 36' pieces and applied to the roof with this double sided tape I found at Staples





The roof on the enclosed section is made from Campbell shingles to give it some variety.
