Don Ball has an good construction article on a 1880s-1890s era small kerosene oil refinery in Aug 2012 Model Railroader.

The scratchbuilt structures and riverboat(!), plus many horse-drawn wagons make a very nostalgic vision. Worth looking at.

I've had the priviledge of operating on that layout (well technically a subsequent version) and I can assure you it looks as good in person as in the magazines. And operates just as well!


Modeling the Wilmington & Northern Branch of the Philadelphia & Reading in 1900-1905. Iron men and wooden cars.
