I have recently been informed that to use diodes effectively, I must use DC.

Has anyone used AC with diodes successfully?

Thanks...Ken

Yes, you have to place a rectifier between the ac and the diodes, Radio Shack has individual rectifiers to experiment with. Someone else will have to tell you what specs you might need.

I have made a few LED light boards for passenger cars using a rectifier, resistor and an LED.

what specificly are you trying to do.
You can make DC from AC and 4 diodes, so it all depends.

Thanks k9 and dj. I am using an automatic routing with diodes to control Peco turnouts for my staging tracks. I had purchased a Snapper but was having trouble getting it to work properly. I had tried AC with the diodes but experienced some problems. I've got the Snapper working now, so I think that I can achieve the results that I want.

Hi Ken,
Yes, to use diodes for routing, you will need to use DC. Check this out to get an idea of how it works.

Go down toward the bottom to see it. This is for Tortoise control, but it can easily be used on dual coil turnout actuators.
