G'day all Narrow Gauge Modeller's,
Announcing the 11th Australian Narrow Gauge Convention, to be held in Melbourne, from March 29th-31st, 2013 (Easter long weekend). Once again to be hosted at Carwatha College (Noble Park North, in Melbourne's South East), expect a weekend of quality model and layout displays, modelling competitions, clinics and workshops, and a variety of traders with the latest hobby needs.

Early planning is underway for this event, with a number of new layouts being prepared for show, as well as a broad spectrum of clinic and workshop topics under development. Invitations for Expressions Of Interest in presenting a clinic will be issued as soon as the website is up.

As usual, there will also be a competition section for the convention. Official competition rules will be posted shortly when the Convention website is ready to go online, with categories for Structures, Dioramas, Locomotives (steam & diesel/other), and Rolling Stock (freight & passenger/non-revenue stock).

As has been the case at past Australian Narrow Gauge Conventions, we are introducing a different "special category" to the 2013 modelling competition. This is designed as a category to perhaps challenge your normal modelling practices, and experiment with some different ways of thinking.

A common problem that so many modellers experience, is the lack of space around home for their hobby, but would like somewhere to display some of their pride and joys of their modelling efforts or collections. The kind of piece that deserves a place on display on the mantle, so why not make one? So, "The Mantle Piece Challenge" is to create a mantle display/diorama, as a stage for your favourite locomotive, rolling stock, figures, vehicles etc. It's a fairly broad range, but we all have out different favourites that we feel are worthy of making it to the mantle. The finished subject choice should reflect on your own interests, with the restrictions being fairly simple:

Maximum depth of 10 inches (25 cm) - a common depth for a standard mantle shelf,
Maximum length of 36 inches (90 cm)- a bit shorter than a common mantle, but still leaves room for the family photo alongside, plus it fits in the car a bit easier,
Backdrop – permitted, providing it still falls within the depth restrictions, so includes either a painted or printed back scene, building flats, mirror…backing finish is up to you,
No restriction on height – we will leave that rule to be decided by you and "the other half",
Can be operating – provided it fits the above dimensions.

It's not too many restrictions, but more of an encouragement to build a piece to help bring your favourite parts of your hobby out of the cave, and into light of day. A few suggestions might be a section of track on a scenic base for that favourite locomotive, a short yard section for displaying favourite rolling stock, a part of a street scape for a collection of vehicles or figures, a bridge across a gorge, A cutting across sheer rock face (for the RGS fans), or it may just be an enjoyable length of scenery, just to mention a few ideas.

Further details will be announced shortly, including registration information, full competition guidelines and clinic topics. So start your plans for attending the 11th Australian Narrow Gauge Convention, Melbourne 2013. Early bookings for travel and accommodation are suggested, due to the holiday period, to avoid disappointment.

On behalf of the organising committee, we look forward to seeing you all again soon, and making it another memorable Australian Narrow Gauge Convention.

Cheers,
ozngconv2013@gmail.com

"The Mantle Piece Challenge" might get a few Aussie's to show their projects here, leading up to the ANGC.

I know I've got a few completed bridges, structures and bits & pieces in various scales, stored away in boxes, that realy need a "home".

Dan. I'll see what can dig up for a few fill-in projects

Thanks for the update

Hi Mario,
The mantle idea was to encourage a bit more pride in displaying one's models (ie worthy to come out of the hobby cave and sit on display on the mantle). It certainly is only limited by your imagination as to what you can get on the footprint, and where the creative mind and interests lead you. I have about three main ideas on the go, and the tough part is narrowing done the project list a bit!

Cheers,
Dan Pickard

This sounds like a good excuse for me to build a timber trestle. Or put all the logging bunks i built onto a base.

Hi all,
Little update for the 11th Australian Narrow Gauge Convention. We have been busy making arrangements with our supporting traders, visiting layouts, and a broad range of clinicians. Traders confirmed to attend thus far include The Railcar, Modeller's Warehouse, Kerroby Models, Mountain Blue Miniatures, Outback Model Company and Narrow Gauge Downunder, with many more excellent Australian hobby suppliers still to come.

A number of new layouts are also marked to be on display, with travel arrangements being negotiated now.

The Convention website has gone live, with details starting to become more public. Registration forms should be finalised in the next few weeks, and be available for online booking through the website.

Hi all,
As the dust starts to settle from the Seattle NNGC, a little further progress with the organising of the 11th Australian Narrow Gauge Convention, 2013.

The website has now been updated, and REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW OPEN. Options available through the online registration page (there is a PDF print version as well), for extras such as the dinner and various items of merchandise.

http://cngg.org.au/ozngc2013

Several layouts and displays are starting to be confirmed for the show, including the latest works from Geoff Nott and Michael Flack (Smugglers Cove On30, with hopefully another module still to be extended on this brilliant new layout), and Laurie Green (Grizzly Flats On30, a finely detailed piece), plus a heap of others still to come.

Hi Mario,
There have thus far been enquiries from US, Canada, UK and New Zealand. Australia makes a good excuse for a holiday, and to drop in on a NGC while you're here :)

Hi there Dan,

The "Mantle Piece Challenge" is a great idea, and I am sure that there will be many wonderful entries.

I have a diorama under construction at present, but I am afraid that it is a little too large (depth-wise) to come within your accepted dimensions.

Oh, the joys of O scale....

Hi John,
Welcome to an O-scalers nightmare :)
Interestingly, the winning diorama piece at from the recently concluded Seattle NNGC would fit just nicely into the mantelpiece challenge for our little show (hint, hint). It looks like the perfect display piece for your favourite log train, sitting proud up on the shelf. Just one of the various interpretations of the challenge I would expect to see come next year.

Cheers,
Dan Pickard

Hi all,
Time once again for a little bit of an update on plans for the 11th Australian
Narrow Gauge Convention, being held in Melbourne, March 29th-31st, 2013 (Easter
Long Weekend).

Most of the final planning is coming into place now, with a broad mix of clinic
and workshop topics filling up the schedule, a good variety of traders making
the journey to meet your hobby shopping needs, and a great selection of some
fine layouts and models from across the country. Not to be forgotten, the
modelling and photography competition is expected to be a room full of
inspiration and effort.

A clinic schedule will be posted to the convention website when finalised, but
expect workshop clinics on scenery techniques, weathering, molding and casting,
DCC pointers, photography, layout animations, as well as selection of topics
discussing interesting narrow gauge operations from near and far. Plenty to
see, hear, learn and discuss over the weekend. One of our regulars, Phil
Badger, has also kindly offered to spend time trying to sorting out you
locomotive running issues with you. Phil will be available to sit and problem
solve with your locomotive, so remember to bring along that model which is
causing you headaches.

Layouts and display wise, confirmed thus far include Geoff Nott & Michael
Flack's wonderful "Smugglers Cove", their latest brilliant modelling effort
capturing the feel of the Maine maritime area from their recent holiday
adventures. Also making the journey down south will be "The Corrimal Colliery
Incline" project from John Garaty and crew, which pulls together nothing short
of some engineering magic to represent the workings of this former prototype
operation. Displaying also for the first time, will be a selection of the
colourful works from Richard Grinyer, whose beautiful layout "Stony Creek" has
graced the cover of Narrow Gauge Down Under several times now. Richard has
turned his creative hands to more diorama work of late (also a feature of NGDU),
and will have a variety of these miniatures on display. Laurie Green's recent
effort, "Grizzly Flats" will be on show, as a fine example of how to make
something so small feel so big with some clever modelling techniques. For the
smaller scales, Ron Wrigglesworth will have his "Wombat Creek Carriage and
Locomotive Works" layout, in HOn30, again proving that size isn't everything.
Grant McAdam, our meticulous builder, will also be hosting a display of his fine
O scale structures as assembled over the years. I'm meant to be bringing my
"Diggers Bend" project along as well, which reminds me I have some more work to
do. On top of this, still more to be confirmed...
http://cngg.org.au/html/layouts.html

Start saving, because there are traders coming with plenty of goods. "The
Railcar" and making the trip with everything narrow gauge they can stuff in the
trailer. Heading all the way down from Queensland, "The Modeller's Warehouse"
will have you covered with all the finest scenery supplies you could need.
"Mountain Blue Minatures" and "Kerroby Models" will be there with lots of white
metal little people to populate your models. "Outback Model Company" will be on
site with their latest laser cut offerings. "Narrow Gauge Down Under" will be
also supporting, so make a note of your missing back issues. "EFD Simply Glues"
will be bringing all the lotions and potions you need to hold the whole lot
together, and "Brunel Hobbies" will be joining us as well, with all the tools,
gadgets, bits and pieces you forgot you need. Once again, still more to be
confirmed...
http://cngg.org.au/html/traders.html

The year is coming to an end (so an early Merry Christmas all), and Easter is
just around the corner. Its time to get on with making your narrow gauge plans
for next year. Since the convention is happening during a holiday period, for
those needing accomodation, it's suggested to book early to avoid
disappointment. We have provided a list of nearby accomodation to try and help
out with your plans.
http://cngg.org.au/html/accommodation.html

So have you registered yet?

Registrations are now open, with early bird booking prices available up until
January 31st, 2013. Bookings for the Saturday evening dinner and various
merchandise closes on February 28th, with all registrations to be finalised by
March 14th, 2013. There is no registrations on the day, so you must be
registered prior o the convention. Registrations are available online via the
website using the secure TryBooking agency. Alternatively, a print verion of
the registration form is available on the website to download and return via
post, with various payment options available.
http://cngg.org.au/html/NGC2013-Registration.htm

We look forward to having all fellow narrow gauge enthusiasts together once
again in Melbourne for another great weekend of everything narrow minded.

Hi all,

Jumping in again for some of the latest updates and reminders for the 11th Australian Narrow Gauge Convention, being held in Melbourne this Easter, March 29th-31st.

The year is certainly starting to progress very quickly, and the first reminder is that the early bird discount for registrations ends on 31st January. After this date, registration prices increase to the full rate, so get inwhile you still can and save a few dollars. Registrations can be done online through the Trybooking service on the Convention website ( http://cngg.org.au/ozngc2013 ), or a registration form is also available via the website to print for those wishing to submit their forms via regular post. Part of the registration includes the optional extras, such as booking for the Saturday evening dinner and awards presentation, and the various pieces of merchandise available to order (polo shirts, chambray shirts, vests, and aprons, all with the embroided convention logo).

So what do you get for your registration… narrow gauge overload! Registration covers you for admission to the convention, with access to all the clinics and workshops on offer, a chance to meet and browse a range of our supporting traders from around the country, experience some of the latest layouts and displays from around the country, as well as access and entry to the modelling/photography competition room. Lunch is provided each day, as well as free tea & coffee throughout the day. A comprehensive handbook is also included with your registration, covering notes and background information from each of the clinics and workshop provided over the weekend (approx. 150 pages of modelling and prototype information).

Activities begin on the Friday evening from 6 pm, for check in and collection of your registration pack. The layouts and traders will be available for browsing and buying, with a good opportunity to catch up with those fellow modellers you may not have seen for a few years. Saturday is an early start, with a full day of clinics and workshops, as well as competition room viewing and voting. A sit down roast dinner is being held on the Saturday evening (within the convention hall), and followed by an after dinner speaker and the awards presentation. Plenty of awards are on offer, including best locomotives (steam & diesel), rolling stock (freight & passenger), diorama, structure, the mantelpiece challenge, as well as photography categories for prototype, model and digitally enhanced. There is also the award for best of show, and the Narrow Gauge Down Under award, and the Rick Richardson award to be presented. Sunday will involve another full day of clinics and workshops, and the last rounds of buying from our traders. The convention concludes at 5pm on Sunday evening.

Plenty of clinics and workshops to keep you entertained and educated over the weekend, including;
John Garaty – The Corrimal Colliery, the prototype and the model,
Geoff Nott & Michael Flack – Maritime Maine (background on building Smugglers Cove),
Lynn Zelmer – Portable track in cane railways, and modelling with paper card,
Prof Klyzlr – Aussie logging winches, and foam core modules,
Rod Parker – Two Foot Gauge in Australia,
Rod Hutchinson – Trees from floral wire,
Phil Badger – Loco Maintenance, and “beyond the fence”,
Adrian Hoad – Microprocessors in modelling,
Martyn Jenkins – Layout automation with JMRI, DCC fault finding, and occupancy detection,
Peter Sutton – Designing a HOn3 layout,
Laurie Green – Design and operate small switching layouts, and “Start to finish”,
Steve Pettit – Modelling Fijian sugar tramways,
Mark Fry – Marrawah Tram,
John Dennis – Realistic layout photography,
Eamonn Seddon – Heywood,
And one of our guests making the trip across from the UK, Nick Ogden, who is travelling with some of his fine diorama’s and presenting a clinic on “brick by brick” construction. For those not familiar with Nick’s modelling efforts, they have been published within the “Finescale Annuals”, or as covered on the Finescale forum here, http://www.finescalerr.com/smf/index.php?topic=489.0 .
The final timetable for the clinics and workshops at the convention will be available on the website closer to the event.

Plenty to see with our visiting layouts and displays as well, with no shortage of the latest and finest modelling efforts from around the country.
Geoff Nott & Michael Flack (NSW) – Smugglers Cove,
Laurie Green (VIC) – Grizzly Flats,
John Garaty & Guy Gadsden (NSW) – The Corrimal Colliery Incline,

Richard Grinyer (VIC) – Diorama display,
Steve Pettit (NSW) – Fiji Cane,
Phil Badger (NSW) – Locomotive service, bring your problem locos,
Rod Hutchinson (VIC) – Regnans Tramway,
plus more still to be confirmed…

Start saving you hobby dollars as well, and making a shopping list, because we have traders bringing their wares from great distances. It’s a great opportunity to check out the latest products first hand, and stock up on your modelling needs. Supporting us thus far;
The Railcar (NSW)
Outback Model Company (VIC)
Narrow Gauge Down Under (VIC)
Kerroby Models (VIC)
Modellers Warehouse (QLD)
EFD Simply Glues (NSW)
Mountain Blue Miniatures (NSW)
Broad Gauge Models (VIC)
Brunel Hobbies (VIC)
Trainmad (VIC)
plus more still to be confirmed…

There will also be a “Bring & Buy” trading board available at the convention. This is your chance to part with some of your unwanted precious treasures. Bring along your items, post your adverts on the sales board, and negotiate your own sales. The Narrow Gauge Convention Committee simply provides this opportunity, but takes no responsibility for the items and the sales, and there are no fees or commissions for this trading board. It is suggested to print your adverts with item details, photos, and contact details, with the item storage the owners responsibility until any sales are completed.

A big thank you to those who have already jumped on board early and arranged their registrations. The Narrow Gauge Conventions in Australia are great events, with plenty to see and do, a great social event for likeminded enthusiasts, and big source of inspirations to keep this hobby rolling forward. We look forward to seeing you all from local and abroad, and making for another successful Australian Narrow Gauge Convention.

Cheers,
