Hey Y'all,

Some good progress this morning, albeit slow and tedious as it is NBW time. I must say, I underestimated how many NBW's it was going to take to complete the kit. I have already installed thrity (30) and I have about another fifty (50) to go. I ran out so more have been painted and are presently drying.

In the mean time, I have been searching for tools and accessories to go with the hoist. I found that Evergreen Hill Design makes an HO Scale Block and Tackle. Perfect for the hoist. They make it in O scale, so I'm buying both to see if the O scale will work as a HD B&T.

Besides the obvious hammers, wrenches, pry irons, kerosene blow torches, anvils, nail and bolt barrels, spare pulleys, chain, rope, cable, blue flags, red flags, and water barrels, what else do you think could go with this?

Thanks!

Manny

62 NBW's and a bunch of slow, tedius work with dry transfers, I'm done for the day. The pictures speak for themselves.

I'm working on acquiring all the winching equipment to make this operational (statically). Once all the necessary stuff to the hoist is attached, she will get a good couple of coats of Dull Coat to seal it.

I'm tired. Enjoy!

Ok, I fibbed. Now I'm done. I got my Rusty Stumps package in today and I wanted to check out the stairs and the jig maker. It worked great. Now I have stairs going from the top platform to the bottom one. I will stain the steps RED for safety. But that will be tomorrow.

Enjoy!

Manny

Ugh! This stuff is like Crack Cocaine. You just can't stop!

Enough though. Time for bed!

I test fit the new stairs. Looks good!

I added "Watch", "FT", and "OUT" to the front. "25" by itself looked awkward.

I started to build the upper platform guard rails. I'll finish them up tomorrow. Then at that point, it's time to wait for the tools and the winch equipment to arrive.

Good night!

Manny

Hi Manny;

This is a very nice project.
I am wondering if you are going to weather it?
I hope not, I am enjoying the "well maintained" look,....

Do you get the chain and hook and so forth or do you have to purchase them separatly?

Hey Greg,

Thank you for the compliment. Yes, I am going to weather, but slightly. Just enough to make it look used, but not abused. That will come in the next few days as I finish up on some of the final work.

How I weather is still up in the air.

Manny

Karl,

The only casting that comes with the kit is a very large pulley. That is it. You have to figure out exactly what you want to do in terms of any Block and Tackle, Ratchet, Winch, etc.

I'm fortunate that I have a friend who worked for years in the Merchant Marine before its demise in '95. He has been helping me craft the perfect set-up. He also is a model railroader of some 40+ years and models the same time period, so he's been a real help.

I will be posting up a list of all the items I use. You may copy it, or through it get your own ideas. Stay tuned.

Manny

Finished the upper handrails for the topside platform. This was made for worker safety. The lower platform will have a handrail also. That is being currently made.

The winching mechanism for the hoist has been decided on. I won't give it away, other than the hint that what you will see is the equivalent of a Porsche being driven into the wrong neighborhood and being left alone for about 15 minutes while the owner goes into a unfamiliar store asking for directions. LOL...

You'll just have to wait and see!

Here are some pics for your enjoyment. Tools and accessories have been ordered.

Tomorrow, or I should say later today, I am going to the hobby shop to get some styrene. I am going to make up some angle iron bracing for the lateral wood braces. Since this hoist is operating in the period of 1910-1920, it would have been upgraded with such, or possibly even replaced with a steel variant. Alas, the S.A. & A.P. is a frugal road and doesn't have the money for such luxuries. Tried and true will have to do, since this hoist was originally built in 1892!

I really like this. I bet I could find a spot for something like it.

Hi, Manny --

You're doing a really nice job with this project. I was so inspired I decided I'd buy the kit and see if I could build it just the way you're building yours. Unfortunately - it's out of stock.

Don, Don't let the kit being out of stock stop you.. I know your skill set is more than strong enough to do this structure from scratch, and Manny has been providing such great photo's and notes that you really have all of the info you need. This would be a great scratch build for anyone, so with just a couple of basic measurements from Manny (hint, hint...) I think that a lot of us could do this one....

I have been thinking about doing this one "on the side" and have been considering using some of the measurements from one of the Sierra West Scale Model kits (Railroad Camp) to create my own 'copy' of this build as Manny has been doing such an excellent job of showing us how to create the structure and at the same time inspiring us with his work.

Don,

Call Ben. He is making kits up right now as he has had a run on these due to the thread. I spoke with him yesterday at length. Call and ye shall receive. LOL...

Kris, thanks for the compliment, but...I will first try calling Ben per Manny's suggestion. All of Manny's upgrades to the kit should be enough to satisfy my needs to scratchbuild.
