This idea has surfaced as I attempt to kit bash a Proto2K Heritage 2-8-8-2 loco to look like a C&O H7 loco with the vandy tender option.

I have 2 tenders I would consider using with this loco,...a VC-16 and a VC-12, both of them those very nice ones made by Bachmann. I have already modified one of my VC-16 tenders to mate up with the Proto2K loco;......I carved out a slot in the front of the tender so that it accepts the stock draw-bar of the Proto2K loco.

Here is my basic thought process on the tender and sound situation. I thought I could take one of my Bachmann VC-16 tenders and one of the VC-12 tenders and put the sound decoder and the speakers in each. (I have in mind a dual hi-bass speaker installation in each one). I could then run either of these tenders behind the 'H-7 Proto2K loco, AND behind the various Mountain locos I have ( I have several Bachmann ones and several IHC ones).

I simply need to equip these two tenders with speaker(s) and a Tsunami decoder. I just need to make everything compatible with electrical mini-connection plugs between loco and tenders. I believe I could just utilize the Bachmann style mini-connection plugs since all my Bachmannn tenders have this style, and two of my Bachmann mountain locos have this style already existing ??

The tenders are equipped with 2 different mini-connectors that make connection to their engines, .....one 4-pin plug, and one 2-pin plug, both orange in color. I assume the 2-pin plug brings the loco's wheel pick-up current back to the electrical board in the tender, and then the DCC power and lights get transmitted back to the loco via the 4-pin plug?? Does that sound correct??

If we stayed with the 'Bachmann connector types' then we would have to provide 2 Bachmann male connectors on the Proto2K H-7. My Bachmann mountain locos already have their male connectors. If I wanted to run these 'sound tenders' behind my IHC locos I would have to provide Bachmann male plugs for them also.

Is this doable, and a correct explaination??

Can I get these mini-connectors from Backmann??

I found this forum via a google search, and ran across a posting by a gentleman from Md that had modified lots of Bachmann locos and tenders. But I don't seem to find his posting now. I hope he sees this posting and makes a reply as I live in Md as well

I also saw this posting about the PCB problems, and it made me wonder about trying to keep the stock boards in my installation?

Hi railandsail, a member sent me the replacement board I needed, that I had fried in that thread. Since then, I just got use to taking out the boards from bachmann locomotives and hard wiring new decoders, some with sound and others without. Anyway, I found it easier to just hard wire new decoders and throw away the PCB's.

Are you saying you just eliminate the connectors between the loco aqnd the tender as well as the PCB's?....since one of the connector plugs is on the PCB board.

If some people thrown them away I would like to get a few of these PCB boards so I could salvage the MALE receptical from them.

I may end up trashing the PCB boards themselves and hardwire the decoders in, but I still want6 to be able to run this one 'master tender with sound and DCC' with my other Mountains, as well as the Proto2K locomotive.

Hi, railandsail, Welcome to the forums.
On my 3 truck shay decoder install I cut the plugs from the rest of the PCB and discarded the rest. I then hard wired my decoder to the posts on the plug part. See pics here.

From the top contact:
1- the white wire for headlite, contact is on the under side
2- blue common wire and rear lite common
3- gray motor wire
4- orange motor wire

5- black wire from pickups and from decoder
6- red wire from pickups and decoder. Notice that I kept them left and right

Hope this will give you some ideas.

Hi Railandsails (what's your name by the way?),
I have just traded out the USRA tender that came on my BLI heavy Mike. I took the DCC sound board out of the BLI tender and mounted it in a Bachmann large Vanderbilt that comes on the Bachmann 4-8-2 Mountain. I added a new speaker, mounting it facing up in the coal bunker and drilled many very small holes in the coal load. I will gets some pics to post of the conversion.

I also am in the process of adding two of these same Vanderbilt tenders to two Bachmann light 2-10-2s. I have to remove the DCC sound units from the USRA tenders and install them along with speakers which will be mounted as in the tender above. Luckily the tender plugs are the same in both the original and Vanderbilt, so the new ones are an easy modifications.

I bought 5 extra Vanderbilts which will take care of all the mods that I want to do.

Best, Andy Keeney

Look out for #1, but don't step in #2!
