After seeing an article in TimberTimes about one particular railroad with extremely long canopy cabs I became interested in the unusual look. When Accucraft came out with their two-truck Climax I was in.

The long canopy was scratch built from brass sheet, angle and square tubing. At the time I didn’t have a resistance soldering system so I used a BernsOmatic mini torch and lots of clamps to hold everything in place while the brass was hot. I took my time and it went pretty smooth. I only had a couple of do-overs.

The wood side panels were made from craft sticks and mounted with Atlas track nails. Again stained with A-I.

I also wanted to give it that backwoods look with a winch mounted on the front pilot. The engine for the winch was scratch built using pictures of Backwoods Miniatures models as a reference. The drum was made from an Ozark Miniatures winch assembly mounted on a scratch built frame.

The roll-up curtains are made of computer printer fabric I bought from a craft store. I like this material because it’s a very fine weave and doesn’t look out of scale. I cut the sections with about 3/16” extra to fold over the edges. Inside the side edges I put Radio Shack .032” diameter solder to hold the roll shape. I rolled the curtains, added some folds and temporarily tied them and painted on 50/50 white glue and water to hold their shape. I mounted them with Atlas HO track nails drilled into the roof rails. Also inserted into the same holes I put the cord to tie up the curtains. After tying the curtains I wet the ends of the strings with 50/50 mix and pulled them down so they would appear they were hanging.

The tool box is simply a block of wood covered with strips and stained with A-I and brushed with powders.

The engineer is one of our Sundance Central figures made to fit the Accucraft Climax. Dave Revelia painted the figure. Thanks Dave.

The engine was weathered with Floquil engine black and dust to dull it down. I dip a brush into a 50/50 mix and then into rust powers and stipple the model or streak it with rust. Then the entire locomotive is dry brushed with craft paints.

I’m now in the process of completing a trail water car to house the AirWire, Phoenix Sound System and a Li-Ion battery. A 2” speaker is mounted in the ash pan with holes drilled in the bottom.

Oops the long canopy is a SHAY, please accept my apologies. I wasn't paying attention when I uploaded the picture. And afterwards it wouldn't let me edit the post. Ephraim please excuse me, begging a thousand pardons.

Well thank you Jerry. I'm a fan of your work too.

Red, please this is a public web-site. I prefer to call her a "winch" on the front.

Frank.

You ruined yet another new shinny loco

Maybe you do need a few Wench's to add some interest on the layout.

Tried to call you today, but no luck.
Will try again another time.

Excellent fine scale modeling as usual

cheers "M"

Mine either Red, that’s why I do my text in Word and then a copy/paste into RRL.

Mario, if Dave gets of his butt and back to modeling his next project is a brothel with lots of wenches. Richard is supposed to be building a church across the road with Woman’s Suffrage protestors. We’ll see how long this takes.
