Thanks for your comments Sean and Andy, actually mark 3 is now done and it is very similar to your suggestions. I haven't taken photos yet but will get these done tomorrow I hope.

The reason for no photos today is that I have one of those garden tractor thingies and was mowing one of my fields today and hit an object which destroyed the mower deck. I ended up replacing the blades, belt and bearing housings plus bearings as well as having to beat the deck back into shape with the biggest hammer I could find. This cost me £190 and the annoying thing about that is that I could buy exactly the same stuff (John Deere) in the States for $130 but a) I needed the stuff right away and b) by the time the freight companies and the import duties had taken their slices the end cost would have been very similar. So now I am having a sulk!!

Stephen, I like the sound of your modelling room, actually I have one on those but it doubles up as the Kitchen table! That's not really true as I have two sheds, one has my layout in it and the other houses my Harley and has a large modelling bench in it but somehow I never model in there as I prefer to stay around the family so mostly the Kitchen table it is. I have all my tools in a case so its easy to set up shop wherever I happen to be and that's usually what happens, wouldn't suit everyone I know but it suits me.

OK, that's enough of me prattling on, another sunny day forecast for tomorrow so, as I take photo's outside if possible, I should get pictures up tomorrow night.

Best wishes to everyone who reads this post and please feel free to join in on the comments, or criticisms if you prefer it, its always good to hear other peoples thoughts and ideas and I certainly appreciate it when they do.

John

Thanks Rick, thanks Andy. I've just realised that I now have 5 cars (there are 2 of mark 3) but only 4 sets of disconnects so mark 1 will probably get a normal set of trucks as its quite big.

I think I will keep them all as I quite like them and they should fit in somewhere on the layout. Next job is NBW's on the wooden cars and a paint job, any suggestions for colours on the wood cars? I was thinking maybe Green might suit.

Got some modelling done today and have finished off two of the disconnect cars although the tank car still is without wheels. I have lost my gauge, I used it a couple of days ago and put it down, went to pick it up again and......its gone...no doubt it will turn up soon when I am frantically looking for something else that I have put down and promptly lost.

John,

Interesting looking cars and a great use of the logging disconnects. As for painting I would paint the metal hopper a black colour and the wooded one a red oxide colour.

nice paint work john.

i know what you mean by putting things down and loosing them. heck for a while i couldnt find a spectrum box with a porter in it, but ive still never found a pack of brass wire, a number of handwheels and a couple drill bits :P

Good suggestions Ron, as you will see the metal hopper is indeed in Black and I spent a lot of today painting the wood hoppers......green!! I should have waited and seen your post, I think Red Oxide would have been good. I'm bound to build more as I will need a few as I am shortly to build a mine so I will keep your suggestion in mind.

You know Andy, I am a master at this loosing things business, the times I put something down and then put my hand back to pick it up, and its gone, are beyond counting. The strange thing is, the pesky thing is usually there all the time, for some reason you just cannot see it.

Hi Dave, I use a scalpel with a 10a blade in a number 3 handle, these are generally brass but mine has a plastic coat which fattens it up a bit. I think on your side of the Atlantic most people seem to use Xacto if what I read in the magazines is true, but to be honest, and with great respect to Xacto, I don't find them really sharp enough. If you have trouble finding a scalpel then they are easily available on the internet and they are not expensive.

Hope this helps.
