Country: USA | Posts: 262 el3637 New Hire Posted - 04/27/2012 :  3:40:39 PM     I have legitimate need for a variety of EL freight cars even though my primary road is N&W, EL rolling stock figures prominently in the east-west traffic. I have only OOB EL stuff so far, but I've been accumulating data, decals, and kits. I like the combo door car. NKP had an interesting and similar car. As did AC&Y... Intermountain did an RTR version of the bright yellow AC&Y car. The door sizes are not quite right but I probably will never get around to changing them. So, you will find Erie cars and Lacawanna cars, but no E-L cars. These are by train miniature (remember their old 'three of a kind' releases?) I do have some DLW and Erie cars on the layout though. The E-L paint scheme is one of my favourite though. It was actually started in August of 96! Some better materials out there now, including the new fuel tanks from Athearn which would be a better starting point than the Kato - although Kato is still king for the motor and gearboxes. This model actually got a minor makeover a couple years ago. Replaced the inertial hatch and dynamic brake vent with Athearn parts from their EL SD45-2, and replaced all of the original fans (modified DA with OMI blades and DA grills) with heavily modified Cannon fans. Also if I were doing it again I'd use a P2K shell for the roofline instead of RPP, and then use those very nice Plano SD45 radiator grills as well. EL is a secondary road for me, I primarily model N&W but I model anything that ran through Hammond Tower so that also includes the EL, L&N, Chessie/C&O, Penn Central, IHB, and half a block to the north the South Shore if I want to go there. I have several Athearn and Kato straight EL SD45s, some Athearn SD45-2s, and a Kato GP35 in EL paint. I think I might also have an older Atlas C424 and a GP7 in EL. As much fun as it would be to build another SDP45, I'm leaning more toward building an E unit - as seen in freight service circa 1974-75, but EL tended to run those in 3 and 4-packs, so making just one won't cut it. I have some old run undec Proto E8s, but not sure I want to start with them or maybe find some of the newer shells. I do so much buying, painting, and lettering, I have to thin out at some point.
