Always inspiring to see Tom's work, especially for those of us in the "Plywood Pacific" stage, or in my case the great "Homasote & Foamboard Central." ;)
As a Granger road fan I never tire of the INRAIL - I only hope to achieve similar results in the years to come.

Dave. I have about 150 covered hoppers. Yes, I rotate them on and off the layout. I'll use one bunch of 50 on average for quite a few ops and then rotate to a new bunch. I have display cases under my layout where they are stored behind clear sliding doors that keeps the dust off of them. I have about 20 covered hoppers on average at any one time on the railroad. I do use more of my Conrail, TP&W, and N&W covered hoppers the most as well as my own patched home road hoppers as they all come from my major interchanges at Logansport. I also do sell of some hoppers from time to time as I collect better ones.
Andy and Dan. Thanks guys for your kind words. Andy, I think oils are easy to use. You should try them sometime. Just don't apply them too thick. Dan, you will achieve the results you want. Just take your time and practice on something else if you're not sure it will work. Always be positive and have that "I can't fail" attitude. Good luck!
Kris, Bryan, Joe, and Ralph. Thanks again guys for your kind comments.

Tom, fantastic artistry....you mention Dullcoting between applications; just curious, do you keep the airbrush loaded and nearby to spray a layer, wait a few, then continue weathering, or is this a process of letting each layer dry awhile before continuing?

Tom, that is a beautiful collection of nicely weathered covered hoppers.

Bruce and Mike. Thanks guys!
Rick. Yes, I keep the airbrush loaded and ready to go. When I finish with one layer of weathering, I coat the car with Dullcote and wait about 2 minutes for the "wetness" go go away. Then I'll continue with the next layer. It goes pretty fast. I try not to rush the process though. At times, I'll go so far and put it down for the evening and continue the next evening.

I've been weathering a few more hoppers this week. Just finished them up last night. Tom Johnson
