Breaking News: The bridge at Goshawful Gulch has been washed out due to the sudden snowmelt in the Cuspidor Mountains. Now the folks in Slapneck cannot drive into Teaspoon Corners for supplies, they have to travel by rail through Corkscrew Canyon, adding hours to the trip. The Braintrust at the Olde & Weary Railway has issued an order for all speeders, railcars and Critters to get to the yard at Forlorn Flats A.S.A.P!!! Translation: Since there seems to be enough interest, I'd like to begin a railcar or railtractor aka "Critter" challenge. The challenge is open to all scales, will begin on April 1st and end May 31st. The rules are simple, build a railcar or tractor (kits, scratchbuilt, etc) featuring automotive or aircraft parts, on an operating Rail Chassis. Bonus points are given if you model it in On30.

Sounds like a fun challenge. I'm not complaining, but, the smallest scale should be given the bonus points. They have to do more with less. I'm just saying!

I can not believe I am getting talked into building another critter.
This thread should help the HO, ON30 and Gn15 guys.

A bag of carrots and a certificate for an eye exam will be given to the builder of the smallest scale critter!

This would be fun to do, but since I'm going to be gone most of the challenge period, I'll be on the sidelines following the fun from my laptop.

Serendipity. I am planning a 'critter' for my Garden Railroad (mostly to use parts I must build or discard) It will be built fot Gauge 1 track as Russian Gauge, for which I do not believe there is a forma designation.

Guys, I am still mulling this over, I have plans to do RGS Goose 2 for convention, but no other specific critter plans. I will mull it over this weekend and see where we are. Geezer says he has alot of critters, I have alot too...so its not that I don't want to jump in, it a matter of having an inspiration piece to do.

I will post DCC info when I try to do a conversion. Pulled the unit apart and the DCC will be easy. The drive is based on a split frame design like most N scale engines are designed. There are two copper v springs that electrically connect the frame to the motor lugs. So remove the copper springs and solder grey and orange decoder wires to the motor lugs. Use the two screws holding the capacitor that you see on the top of the drive to connect the red and black wires to the decoder to cover the track pick up.
Note, the little wheels do pick up power but can be removed as the large wheels touch the contact tabs to run power to the frame.
Larry here in this thread; http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23061 You posted about the Bachmann HO bus, I have that bus, and have been tossing around for a while now about using it in a build. A few things I need to know/clear-up from you. 1. When you crack open the frame to get to those two copper v springs, does anything else fall out, and is it easy to put back together? 2. The two screws holding the capacitor where the red and black wires go, do you throw the capacitor away because you no longer need it, or do you have to keep it for some reason? If I'm going to join in on this critter build, it gives me a good reason to use that bus now.

1. When you crack open the frame to get to those two copper v springs, does anything else fall out, and is it easy to put back together?
You do not have to open the frame to get the v springs out but you will have to open the frame to solder the motor leads.
Everything falls out, gears motor etc if you open it wrong. When you open the frame keep the screw side up and open carefully and everything will hopefully stay in place.
2. The two screws holding the capacitor where the red and black wires go, do you throw the capacitor away because you no longer need it, or do you have to keep it for some reason?
The capacitors are to comply with European radio interferance laws. Are you going to run the train in europe ? if not toss it.
If I'm going to join in on this critter build, it gives me a good reason to use that bus now.
If you run into issues you know where to find me.
