Let me guess: When you model a building from a picture,
you take the doors or single windows as a base measure,
say 32" wide for the door, and then figure the running length of the
building from that???

You don't need modelling tips, Martin, as you have really become a master.
Here is a forum tip^. If you want to be able to find even a completely forgotten topic, think of subscribing to this topic. Then you'll find it easily in your 'My subscriptions' page.

That's also a part of the trick, try to determine the 1:1 size of the floorplan and the workable hights compared to the space I have. But most of the time it's just for inspiration and I combine a few things from different pictures. Like the barkshed, it's like 27' x 17' roughly on the floorplan. Sounds within the compression still reasonable to me. Track front 13'4" the back 10'.. I cheat a bit taking buildig sizes 1:50..easier like 100mm becomes 1mm x 2 is 2mm sorry for the metric but I'm sooo used to that

Martin, I have been following your posts from the beginning now a long time ago. I like your technique, you are always breaking new ground and explain carefully as you go along and your enthusiasm rubs off on me and I always want to go and model after reading your posts. This project looks as though it will be very interesting. I will follow closely and you have made a great start.

Now that would be the metric way I believe, but where does the 1:87 normaly come from, in england the have 1:76. You listed the regular architect scales John.

European O scale as originally created by Marklin (can't find the umlaut) was 1:43.5 on 32mm track and 7mm to the foot.

HO or Half O is 1:87, which is 43.5 times 2.

1:48 O scale should run on 30mm track.
