I was getting frustrated trying to locate track spikes. Fast Tracks has Micro Engineering 1/4" Spikes - 1000 pieces for $9.40 plus $5.85 shipping for a grand total of $15.25 .. sheesh.
Since I what I was wanting was a handful to add as cosmetic spikes on my On30 bridge got to thinking that I've see references to staples cut up .. and seems to me that the appropriate size copper wire bent over and flattened slightly and blackened would also work .. after all .. all I want is for it to *look* like a spike head.
Thought I would toss this out for responses.

Les, I've heard of people doing that. It would simulate a spike head I guess. Figured someone would be able to give a thumbs up or down on it. Suppose I would be better off in the long run just to buy the Micro Engineering spikes .. just irritating that I only need 120 or so .. and the one hobby shop within striking distance - may - have spikes (or not) is a 60 mi round trip.

Ed, Yup I hear you on that one, and when you get spikes they are all bigger or smaller than what they are supposed to be.

Another Option:
http://www.proto87.com/ho-track.html
Precision Milled, Stainless Steel Spikes 150% Over Scale (S,O) These 150% scale spikes are precision milled from "half-hard" stainless steel sheet to a far more accurate and realistic shape and head than traditional bent wire spikes. Although still smaller than even "micro" traditional size HO spikes, these are found by many to be easier to handle and use than our near scale spikes. Also they are ideal for "S" scale and many On3,On30 and O scale applications. These are also supplied in two frets; 250 short depth length and 175, pass through, longer than tie depth, length, for fixed down track. All types come in 1 fret and 6-fret pack quantities. And a special mixed type sample pack is available for first time users $3.95

How do you color the stainless steel spikes before you install them? I would think paint would chip off during the driving. Doing blackening agents work on stainless?
