If I am not mistaken, you brought that car to one of our OP sessions. I was very impressed. You sure put those Archer rivets to good use.
Thanks for sharing and regards, Vic Bitleris

The door gussets were scratchbuilt from 0.005" styrene and Archer rivet decals. Painted with Scalecoat II New Haven orange paint and Scalecoat II black; decals from Highball Graphics set #F-140. I've been unable to determine if the running board (roofwalk) was orange or black so I left it orange. And the final ingredient was time...of which I spent rather a lot on this car. It needs a good coat of rust and crust to look right though...

Here's another one...a Speedwitch resin kit built and painted with Model Master Zinc Chromate primer, decaled, and weathered with acrylic tube paint washes.

You might want to add some more dust along the bottom of car, otherwise I think this looks very good on a color that can be difficult to weather effectively.

Here are some recently finished freight cars!

This is the second Morrison-Knudson Covered Hopper, that I did out of their fleet of 274 cars. Atlas PS2 2003 CF Covered Hopper painted Armour Yellow and lettered with Herald King Decals.

This is a McKeen Models ACF Exterior Post Boxcar that I am using to stand in for a Major-Freuhauf X74 Boxcar. Substituted a X-Panel Roof from a Branchline Berwick kit to replicate the difference between the X71 and X74 Boxcars. All were used for clean lading products, mostly paper loading. Floquil PC Green paint and lettered with Microscale Decals.

This is an Eel River Models, 62' PC&F RBL used for hauling Coors Beer from Golden Co. Assembled the flat kit and painted with Scalecoat Aluminum and Armour Yellow and lettered with Microscale Decals.

Thanks for looking!

Here's a kitbashed Union Pacific side-door woodchip hopper in HO that I recently finished.

I used an E&C Models woodchip hopper kit, cut it down to the correct height, sanded off all the side detail, laminated on new sides and added the ribs, doors and other detail using plastic strips. The decals are from a combination of Microscale sets. I mixed the paint to get a very dark brown that looks correct to my eyes.

The couplers are KD #5, the ladders are brass ladder stock and the wheelsets are P2K.

I used photographs off the internet and an article by Doug Geiger in the July, 1996, "NMRA Bulletin", pages 29-30 and 38-39, "Wood Chip Gondola with a Twist" as my references.

Entry edited to reflect references.

I've been working on building an AnnArbor sand train. Here are some of the cars I have recently finished.

I had these and several others on display at the Marion RPM meet earlier this month,

but I had only weathered a couple of them at that point. I have been getting some photo help from friends for reference to weather them as they would look around 1978.

Brian Everett

DTI406, your stuff looks amazing, I used to follow you on the Atlas SPF forum, I could never join that forum for some reason to tell you how well your cars look.

Matthew, thank you for the kind comments. I enjoy building all these cars.

Briam, what decal did you use on the AA Covered Hopper with the ferry in the fog scheme?

Finally got some more cars done this week.

Eastern Car Works 2600CF Airslide Covered Hopper Kit, Added airline under side of car and lines from the Air Reservoir to the Triple Valve. Substituted A-Line Sill Steps for the Cast ones. Painted White and lettered with Herald King Decals.

Intermountain Railway Company 60' PS Fisher Body Car, Painted Black and ATSF Red and lettered with Oddballs Decals.

Athearn 86' Hi-Cube Boxcar, removed cast grabs and replaced with ladders to more replicate a Thrall Car. The AA had purchased cars from the GB&W that were manufactured by both Greenville and Thrall and were used from Ford via Ferry Service across Lake Michigan to the Ford Plant in Minneapolis. Per photographs had to cut the letters and apply individually so they would be in the proper place on the side of the car versus the diagram included with the Herald King decals. Added Details West Extended coupler pockets and A-Line Sill Steps.

Thanks for looking.

This is an Front Range 50' Boxcar which is used to replicate an Evans 50' Boxcar, substituted a Detail Associates 10' Superior Door and extended the door tracks to match. Painted with Floquil B&M Blue and Black Paint and lettered with Herald King Decals.

This is an Athearn 50' PC&F RBL w/14' Door, used A-Line Sill Steps in place of the plastic steps, painted with Floquil Tuscan Red Paint and lettered with Herald King Decals.

This is a MDC - FMC 5277CF Boxcar, painted with Floquil B&M Blue and Black paint, lettered with Microscale Decals. This car was used in paper service.

Thanks for looking!

Hi Rick,

The FinF scheme requires a couple decals sets from Herald King.
The covered hopper set for most of it, although you need to re-arrange the values for the LTWT CAPY, and LDLMT.
The herald on the plate is from the caboose set.

I have another one in the works....

Here are a couple more cars I have finished in the last month...

1st a DT&I XF boxcar assigned to General Mills in Toledo.

This model was built using a FR ACF riveted 40ft boxcar, opened the door, and cutoff the sill and replaced with strip styrene.
The doors were made by splicing a couple McKean plug doors together to make them taller. I stacked the pieces for the sill together, and made them all at once so they wouldl all have same sahpe, then glued them in place. Decals are mostly HK with the dimensional data and capy info from Champ.

Next is a PRR F33 well hole FM.

This model is a F&C kit - a single piece carbody makes this an easy one to build. Sheet lead was glued to the bottom of the well, and replaced the trucks with Greenway Product brass trucks to add more weight to the car. Paint was a mix of Pollyscale Oxide and Freight Car Red. F&C provided the decals. Weathered with some washes of Pollyscale RR tie brown, and black, and Bragdon weathering chalk.

Last - a PRR F34 4-truck FM.

This was a scrapbox build. I don't recall when I acquired this, but it's been in the scrapbox for years.
Model was made from a Bachmann car, and was modified by lowering the height of the body casting (sanding on sheet of sandpaper on tabletop to about 1/2 the original height. I then sectioned the body into 4 pieces to obtain the proper length. Rebuilt the span bolsters to obtain 10ft spacing between the trucks, and used trucks from a couple Bowser N5 cabins I had (these have 5ft wheelbase). Weights were made to git into the opening in the car, and a new deck was made from .020" styrene. I marked out the hole pattern and drilled all the holes into the deck using a dremel. Paint is same as the F33 and I used leftovers from the F&C set to do most of this car, supplimented the numbers from another F&C kit I had that had PRR decals (H30 kit).

Some of these may be on display at the NMRA in Grand Rapids next week in the Model Showcase/Contest Room
- No, I don't enter the contest part, but do like to share what I do, and if you want a closer look or have questions, I will be there (occasionally, but will be in the Pantlind ball room working the Operation Road Show/Wabash layout mostly.

Hope to see/meet some of you there!
Regards,
Brian Everett
