I have repainted the water to a more gray color and in between coats of gloss medium I wanted to make a few 1/24 scale seagulls. I decided to make one standing and one flying. I figure I can use resin castings of those to make many more positions such as flying with different wing positions and standing with wings raised.

I used a bird ID book to draw silhouettes of each. I scanned these into the computer because it is much easier to adjust their size as a .jpg file. I then printed out a copy and temporarily glued it to a sheet of .020 styrene. I cut them from the styrene and then all that was needed was to build up the body mass with epoxy putty.

Next I will make rubber molds and cast several copies in resin.

I forgot to mention that those two gulls are seagull1 v 1.0 and seagull2 v 1.0.

As I often do, I take one of my castings and rework it to try for something better. It is easier to carve and sand the resin birds than it was the epoxy putty versions.

I have already inproved the wings, tails, and bills of both birds and will soon have seagull1 v 1.1 and seagull2 v 1.1 as well as a seagull3 v 1.0, a seagull4 v 1.0, and a seagull5 v 1.0.

Sorry about that, I couldn't resist the version stuff. I have inproved both castings and will make molds tomorrow. After I get some of the new castings I will make two more flying birds using those casting but changung the wing positions. I will also make a standing bird with wings raised.

This is all to point out the fact that it is easier to use parts of previous castings to make new ones rather than starting from scratch each time.

Lyon, Thanks for the nice comments. It will all come together soon. I have the mods made for the different wing positions and will make the mold today. The "water" has it's last coat of gloss medium but it's a heavy one so it will be days before it's dry.
Cheers,
Bob

It's getting close to done!! I still have to stack a bunch of goods around the Army/Navy store. Don't know if you can see them but there are 6 gulls flying behind the ship, 5 in one group and one a little behind and above.

Excellent looking gulls Bob! Any chance you could make me a couple of humming birds in N scale? Having grown up on the coast I have to say those are VERY realistic and the poses/positioning is excellent as well!

Tyson, Thanks. I grew up on the coast too and have some seagull stories I could tell. While I no longer live on the coast, there are tons of seagulls that seem to like the river here all year long and several hundred use a local shopping center parking lot for a home all winter!!

Let me work on the N scale humming birds.

Cheers,
Bob

Those gulls are terrific Bob! The whole scene is coming together very nicely indeed. I also prefer the greyer water in the last shot.

Karl A., Thanks for the comment and as this project nears completion I again want to thank you and Doug Foscale for the idea and inspiration to construct the Army/Navy store. This was a really FUN project.
Cheers,
Bob

Wow, those seagulls are fantastic! I've made a couple of red-tail hawks and a roadrunner so far, but those were just one-offs and were all clay. I like your technique of using a styrene cutout, I'll have to try that next time.

The whole scene looks great.
