Time to start something going! I still have not figured out a track plan for the RR but I do have a must include scene.

Here is the theme of the town for the RR complete with tracks running down Main Street.

I will change a few of the structures on the right side of the picture.

The Barber Shop on the left was started a year ago.

I started the tent structure today and I am building the third building in from the left as part of the Chambers Challenge thread. http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=29307

UKGuy (Karl) helped me get started on the logs I would need for the structures side walls.

I used 1/4" bass wood and have shaved off the two front corners with a razor saw. I then beat the wood with a hammer and attacked it with a wire brush. Next I drilled a bunch of holes and glued in toothpicks in the holes.

Here is the test log progress.

Waiting for the glue to dry but I need to post to motivate myself.

Very interesting project Larry.
Sounds like you were doing some full contact model building with all that beating and attacking going on.
Going to enjoy seeing you build this.

Nice project, Larry. Fine to contribute to Mike Chambers challenge, and fine since you've chosen a pleasant model to build.
I'd say that the penultimate 'big' building (the clear one, with three windows and two doors on the front wall if I see it well) looks interesting too. But it is much bigger.

Dave,
The ballast looks like plain dirt in the picture.

Frederic and Rick.
Please push me on this thread and feel free to tell the truth. I want to improve my modeling and there is nothing that is really complicated in this scene.

Geezer,

Just for you a sample log.

I am only rounding the corners that can be seen on the model. All other sides will be left flat to help in the glue process.

Notching the corners is becoming a learning experience. That is why I am working on the tent before I move to Chambers building.

Larry,

Interesting project you have started there. It's going to be a great looking town scene when finished judging from the photo.

Have a question on the log photo, what is it supposed to be? My guess its a start of a hull of a ship being built by first year apprentices who are not following a plan.

Looking forward to following along on this project as the different building constructions should provide a lot of interesting modeling.

Ron,
The first picture is how I plan to make the logs for the building. The toothpicks have been glued into the logs to form crude branches of the trees.

All of the toothpick branches have been cut off in the second picture. I hope the log now looks like it was once a tree with branches.

Well, Larry, that is an ambitious project.
Most guys would just paint some knots/limbs on the logs, but not you.
That sure will look true to life and make the finished walls authentic.
A great idea.

Very nice!!!
Great injunuity! ;-)
If it was me, and it isn't, I'd cut back on the knots a bit.
But the log looks very realistic....will be interesting
to see where you wo with this one brudda....

Dave,
I wish I could take credit for the toothpick idea but Karl(UKGuy) pointed me that direction. I think it was his April fools joke on me.

A little more progress.

Hey Larry

You joints look really good! I'm with Geezer, maybe a few too many brances... but I'm no expert...

Keep the photos rolling in. What are you planning to use for the tent material I tried cheesecloth soaked with a tea bag once and that was close.

Good luck!
