Had a chance this afternoon to get some pictures of some visiting rolling stock on the Hard Knox Valley Railroad. While folks around here have seen covered hoppers like the one sporting the Western Pacific road name, but the New Haven flat bed with the New England Transportation Company trailers has turned into a head scratcher. Seems nobody has a clue how to unload them. Apparently Turtle and Preacher along with some of the other locals have volunteered to clean them out. Pretty sure the next pictures I get will show a police presence around the flatbed.

There has been a lot of militant murmuring in these parts for the last few days. You can really sense an uneasiness in the local populous. I had put it down to the combination of steam-bath weather and nightly thunder storms, but it seems that a storm of another kind has been brewing. I had been asking around as to the source of the grumbling, and overheard some of the local miners in the diner this morning talking about "The Blue Alien"!

It turns out that one of the railroad "higher ups" had been taken in by some marketing spin and decided to order a load of Blue Coal for use in the furnaces and stoves at the various railroad installations. I ran out with my camera to see and sure enough there was a load being shovelled off a the switch tower.

Now Illinois miners are a gentle and understanding breed. They are just tickled pink to have Pennsylvania coal being delivered in their patch.....Yeah right!!! (Just Google Herrin Massacre to see how understanding they are!)

Well at the next shift change, a none to happy bunch came marching out of the mine, tools in hand.

before anyone could stop it, the mine switcher had crossed the main and taken control of the Blue Alien.

and into the mine limits it disappeared.

I had a real hard time seeing what was going on as some seriously menacing looking chaps were making darned sure that prying eyes could not see what was going on.

By climbing the city water tower I was able to spot the hopper vanishing into the mine engine shed.

The doors slammed shut and were quickly bolted closed. Somehow I don't think that this story is over.

Dave,

I don't think Preacher and Turtle should be let anywhere near the trailers. We all know what kind of trouble follows these fellows. But if you can find a ramp near by I'm sure you can get the trailers unloaded and loaded back on the flat with a tractor.

Here are two pictures of the Grits hopper on Dave's layout and mine.

See any differences other than location?

Good eye, Simon. Brake wheel it is. I don't know when/where is disappeared, but the backshop put a new one in place.

It is great that there are so many excellent repair shops on the Interchange. Hopefully when the miners get done with the "Blue Alien" it won't be in need of any repairs!!

Not sure if the brake wheel was there when the GRTZ car first rolled through the Valley. If it was I'm pretty sure we all know who swiped it. What Turtle & Preacher would want with a brake wheel only they know? Officer Jones is headed over to their hideout in the woods to see what he can see.

As night approaches and the light starts to fade an Alton hopper was quietly spotted by the tower.

After a full shift down the shaft shovelling more coal was hardly the way these lads wanted to spend their evening, but they have a plan.

Slap on some blue paint and the high sulphur coal of the Illinois basin takes on the disguise of high grade PA Anthracite! Is this a case of pure genius from our canny miners?

The "Blue Alien" hasn't been seen all day so is presumably still locked down in the engine shed?
