I'm thinking about another MoW flat car with something "interesting" on it and that idea should come into focus in the next couple of weeks.

In the meantime, here's the basic traction flat car body assembled so far....

I'd been meaning to do this for a long time, so I finally got around making my own version of this car in resin.

Should be useful launching point for a double end work trolley project.

Martin,
Your stuff is very timely for me and also extremely interesting. I have just starting messing around with traction modeling and would like to build a small On30 traction motor and freight cars for a industrial line. So I'm guessing that I'll be using a HO scale wheel set and driver mechanism of some type. Would you have any recommendations on where to start (motors, drawings, books etc...)? I have ordered some books from Carsten's publications, but they take a long time to get out. I have a lot of On30 stuff, thus the selection of gauge.

Thanks,
Bill

There used to be several books by Middleton that were general traction/trolley books. As you get more specialized there's a CERA book called "Not Only Passengers" that I like that addresses freight operations ina broad sense. There are a lot of books out there that are RR specific that have good stuff in them, but then you might only want a small portion of those books and that might be a bit investment for small return. There's also a few books by Keilty that are about doodlebugs and the like that might be useful; make the doodlebug powered from overhead wire!

One great thing about On30 and doing this is that you have available to you a rich selection of drive units, etc to drop a body shell over -- a lot more economical that O scale drives!

Finally got that one traction flat that's been lingering off the bench and completed; not that I need it or anything - more about clearing unfinished projects out so that I can get into some new messes...

Very nice work there Martin!
I feel inspired from seeing yours, to try making one of these for myself.

Go for it! The only parts on this car that's tough to track down are the radial couplers -- I know where to get them in O scale, but for any other scale, I've got no idea.

In this particuclar case I married Kadee's into what I think were Kemtron or PSC parts that I got in a miscellanious box of parts a few weeks ago.

And, 2 more into the queue............

1st up is what I think is a really roughly assembled AN/Zimmer IT reefer kit that's going to take a lot of effort, but then again maybe I'll just finish it out and let it roll around w/o looking too closely?

And, this is something that I scored off eBay for about $30 delivered - a MidCo door and a 1/2 round end CERA trailer. This is how they get sold - you get an assembled body shell w/o any of the detail parts, trucks or couplers..... Looking at it I think that my scartchbuilt ones are a lot nicer, but then I'm slightly biased.

A bit up the page I had posted a picture of a traction flat that I never got around to following through on.

Well, it's sat far too long on the bench (in the way!!) and so now it's found it's purpose and has found a few bits and odds & ends on its decking,
