Hey, Guys,
I got the new Carstens Structure Book over the weekend. WOW.
I haven't had time to go thru the whole book, but its got some really good info in it.
I think they did a good job.

This the reprint/updating of the Wayne Wesolowski book? I have one of the 1st editions, and I'll be interested to see what has changed/been updated.

Rich, I was wondering the same thing as Dave. Is this the announced new edition of Wesolowski's classic from the early 80's?

Peter, are you talking about the new edition or the original? (Either way, your 'gold mine' comment is well taken.) I can check out the original from my local library but I'm thinking about buying the new edition because I'm assuming the revisions include updated techniques and other new material.

This is indeed a re-print of the 1981 TAB book (later a 1984 Carstens Book). Although I had checked the old TAB version out of the library, I bought this reprint a few weeks ago. Well worth the cost IMHO.

I didn't realise there was an older Tab book on structures; I have the one for scratchbuilding in general, and the one for railroad cars. This one does look interesting, and the price is decent too.

Did Carstens re-title the book? "Structures" didn't ring a bell with me, so I checked Mid-Continent Library's online catalog. The 1981 Tab book is titled Model Railroad Scratchbuilding. The other one they have, also a Tab book, is titled ABC's of Building Model Railroad Cars (1985).
Anyway, I was thinking that if the this new book is a revision of the 1981 Tab version, that's going to blow the resale market for the original. The last time I checked - maybe 3 years ago - used book dealers had "MRR Scratchbuilding" listed for about $110 - $140, depending upon dealer. I thought that was crazy!

Here is the one I got many moon's ago. I believe the new one is the same as a reprint. If you look at David's (sparkman) link, it's the same cover.

Hey Mike, I saw the same thing about five years ago, prices ranging from $25 to about $150 for Scratchhbuilding Structures from A to Z. I was able to find a used Version (in EXCELLENT condition) on Amazon for $10.00 plus 2 bucks shipping. It is a great book and I read from cover to cover. Actually, this is the same book I checked out of a library a long time ago and actually built the bridge across a drainage ditch. It was my very first "fine" scratchbuilding job incorporating scale size lumber and NBWs. I think these folks see a model railroading book and think the same thing as Lionel Trains, $$$$. So, it pays to shop around a bit. Regards, Vic Bitleris

Vic, after reading the blurb in David's link and the blurb in Lou's post, I think this is the same book as the old Tab book, "MRR Scratchbuilding." Apparently, Carstens retitled it with their first printing. Well, whatever the case, this edition is going on my 'gotta buy' list.

I received my copy yesterday, and so far I have only had time to read Chapters 1 & 2, but it's already worth the price I paid....
