I started this kit 3 years ago & gave up. Last week it called to me & so now its almost finished. Some window glass & somehow figure out how to install a headlight. Should it be a white 3mm led-not sure how to do it but w/ a little direction from all you folks mayby I'll get done.

Dale,
Glad it called out. Looks pretty cool. the LED you have should be fine. You can always tone it down by spraying the lens with dullcote.

Dale,
Your critter looks great.
I have only built the mighty midget, I put DCC in but did not try to light the unit.
You may consider putting a 1.8 mm LED in for the headlight, most 1.8 mm LED's are less than 15V so you will need a resistor.
Here is a thread from last year that may help. http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=22797

Thanks for the kind words guys. I've been looking on ebay for the correct LED's since I don't have any now. What volt/size/color do you all reccommend? Do I need a resistor for sure & do LED's work both AC/DC? Please understand, I'm not too swift when it comes to electrical thingies...including my puter? :-() When I get this wired up the next project might be the BVM shay kit I have, but its a lot more complicated than this little guy.

I may have a little practice, but I think Larry is far more knowledgeable than I am. If he says 1.8 mm then that's probably the way to go.

OK Arthur, I have a lot to learn so many questions will come up. Geezer, I believe it was an old Bachmann 44/70 ton diesel switcher w/ the powered trucks is what I used. Dallas can tell you for sure-they are hard to find but do show up on ebay. It runs quite well, if a bit fast. Some more weight will also help w/ its short wheel base.

Dale,
I think that Louis (desertdrover) is the real LED expert. I just know the size difference for the 1.8mm LED's I have is helpful on the installs.
Here is a link to the thread I did for installing DCC and adding weight to one of these 44 ton power trucks. It really helped the critter run much slower. http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23689

Hi Dale --
Your critter looks great! Nice construction and detailing ... especially like the coloring/weathering effects on the deck and air tanks.
Yes, that kit (discontinued) used a power truck from the old 44-tonner with dual motors ... a bit of weight and some break-in time and it should slow down nicely.
