Verne, the mining scene looks great, have a question about the two wrecked cars though....Did they come tumbling down the mountain loaded? They are very well done.

Thanks Ron...the particulars aren't too clear as it happened some years ago and the fellows responsible were let go, but given the damage the cars were probably loaded. The accident happened in the tunnel, so the easiest way to clear them was to remove the ore and then drag them down to the lower station and out of the way.

Well, I have been working on the layout, lots of little details and some photography. Here's an image of the Cielo Incline I made by manually joining three different photos focused at successively farther points in the frame.

I used software from Helicon Focus on my PC to do this before switching to my mac, and I need to find software that will do this (if it is available). It is very time consuming, and the software seems to render a more reliable result.

Verne-

Hard to believe that a few months ago this was an unremarkable corner of your layout. The incline ranks right up with your coke ovens for visual interest and as an illustration of industrial history.

Beautiful Verne !

Not only the whole picture, but also the tiny details like the link-and-pin couplers and the hopper cars that match the Porters so well.

cheers, Leo.

Thank you...

Lynn, it is pretty steep! Mining inclines like these were used to haul ore down, and cars going down were balanced by empties going up. A passing siding in the middle of the run allowed the cars to avoid collision. Funicular railroads like the one at Royal Gorge in Colorado use a similar principle...and the ride is quite dramatic. It doesn't show in this picture, but a cable is lowering these cars to the bottom of the incline, which means a few empty cars are approaching the top.

Mark, a few months ago I took some photos in this corner, and looking at those photos a few days ago made me realize how much the incline scene has changed the feel for the entire room. Two more corners to go and my little layout is finished!

Leo, thanks...I was fumbling with those pesky 'Lincoln pins' (as Dallas calls them) the other day, but it really is worth it for small layout like mine where most of the trackage is in easy reach. Just hope the eyes, steady hands and tweezers hold out! I have been fiddling with these crazy things for three years now, and am still having fun.

Thank you, gentlemen!

I was curious if Helicon Focus had any news on a mac version of its focus-enhancing software and - score! I downloaded the 30-day free trial, and the bug has bitten. Here's the photo above re-shot with five separate focal planes merged by the software:
