I love your last shots, Verne. The mountain, the track winding around it, this wonderful scenery. It's really a nice, quite unusual layout.

The flora is looking great. I really like the "shelf" shot. As I've said before, I prefer the High Sierra (or any pine forest)but the dessert does has a beauty of her own (where man hasn't dumped on her)and I have always enjoyed my rides through her(except that time I lost my motor 10 miles north of Tucson).

Frederic, thank you...the wonder of a camera is it lets us see our creations at angles and elevations the eye can't. I have already spotted a half dozen things I need to fix, but I was pleased with the perspective.

Bob, the desert has a way of taking its toll on all things mechanical. I hope you have been able to see more than the sights along I-10, there are some nice views but the most dramatic stuff is off the beaten path!

Ron, the cacti are a huge part of setting the desert location, and they have been a bit of a challenge. I am still fine tuning how I make them, and plan to revise my agave and saguaros. They are still easier to make than a forest of trees!

I have been progressing slowly on the incline, I etched some corrugated roofing and scratchbuilt a stone structure for the scene tonight. Just a little burned out on the layout right now, only working in short spurts. I will post progress when I can.

You've probably seen this site, but others might not have. The sections on the DV RR and baby gauge, and the Tecopa RR have some good pictures of the various level entrances that some Death Valley area gold and silver mines had. The Tecopa mines had some inclines, some of the pictures show the remains of some. Also somewhere on this site or another I found some pictures of a tramway that was only about 200 feet long.

It also supports the sudden emergence of a "mountain" above the surrounding terrain and mine entrances. There is an adit opening near the top of the south side of Afton Canyon. (UP RR route along the Mojave River where it finally drains and soaks in the the desert.) I'm pretty sure it was a tailings/waste rock dump into the canyon. Can't find the pic in my collection though.

The canyon opening on the left side is pretty abrupt, makes about a 90 degree turn. The adit is about a hundred feet down the face and about a tenth of a mile behind the big change in direction. That's the mighty Mojave River there and my hand is showing where it stopped flowing. The puddle in the ruts to my right is not moving

The UP RR runs along the base of the cliffs on the right of the picture



There used to be a cliff face behind the bridge in this shot. In the 1938 floods the river decided to use the tunnel through the cliff as a shortcut to the canyon in the distance. The UP decided to open the tunnel into a cut, haven't had that kind of flooding since.



This is in Cajon Pass at Sullivan's Curve. Don't know if it has a name or not.

Here is a shot of a long incline. It's in the California State Library. If the pic doesn't show search the pictures collection under "Randsburg" I beleive it's neathe Yellow Aster. Note the large freight wagons on the left.

The shot with the incline and short tram is interesting; Im curious as to why there is a short tramway between the incline and loading bin, why not just have the incline unload directly into the wagons?
