Many thanks, all. The town ended festivities peacefully, with only a few D&D arrests to mar an otherwise fine celebration!

I had some time over the Christmas / New Years break, and built a long stone retaining wall for the layout:
The wall is made of about 2,200 cut travertine blocks, individually placed and stained.
Here, mining nearby has caused the earth to shift, requiring some reinforcement to prevent the wall from collapsing on the switchback lead below.
These are blocks I purchased in sheets at Lowe's tile department. I separated them from the nylon backing, boiled them to soften the glue, picked off the glue, and then glued them to the styrofoam roadbed supporting the switchback trackage when dry. I then stained them with a wash of dirty gray.

There's still a bit more to do, but I am glad the heavy lifting is done!

Verne, That is the best looking wall I have seen this side of China! The bracing is an excellent touch. Could you also use the tiles for footings? Larry

Thanks, Larry...absolutely, I have stacked some of the blocks to support a tank from a Bachmann tank car that will be the oil fuel for my larger lokies. They also serve as a foundation for a cast plaster stone engine house kit, to lift it up a bit and set it on the layout nicely. In short, they make great foundations, etc.
The color in these photos look rosier than the actual wall, unfortunately this is one of those things that seems to look better to the eye than to the camera. Thanks for your comments!

I'll have to say I'm not crazy about the bracing but the wall is awesome! What is that product called and how does it come packaged?

What a tremendous wall. That must have taken a lot of time.

Verne-
Amazing .
With a slight blue-green stain, the blocks might pass for you-know-what
