Good evening gentlemen. Recently I have been lurking, lurking. Ever lurking and not getting any modeling done at all. Only excuse I can make is "Landscaping the yard".

Yet while I slave away digging and toting the wheelbarrow, I have time for thoughts of modeling. Techniques, applications and construction processes. I tell you I get so fired up I just want to chuck the garden tools and dive into the modeling. But I restrain myself and long for the cool days of the coming Fall when the frost will chase me indoors once again to a hot cup of tea and the pleasures of the open bench.

A new bench at that. I have made plans to move my modeling bench to the back porch where it will reside unmolested by interlopers and the MIL.

So my plan for an amusement type ride is still the same idea. Although the exact track plan is still to be determined. I've been surfing for prototype rides and I find most of the ghost trains are a 3 wheeled affair that follows a single rail around a flat course past spooky displays. I must admit that my track plans so far look very much like a Wild Mouse type of ride. I did find a ride that is a cross over between a Wild Mouse ride and a ghost house ride. So I'm thinking about that.

Still plenty of time and I like that.

Soon I will do some experiments to determine performance and that will help finalize my design.

So that's where I'm at right now.

Christopher

I'm also with you here...I'm working on an HOn3 diesel for the challenge. Next will be some rolling stock, then trackwork and scenery! This is too good of a challenge to ignore.

As I promised I unpacked my Shoebox layout first. Unfortunately all my other modeling 'gear' is still packed up, so you'll all have to wait for an update. But one is coming!

My shoebox layout - Ingleferry Wharf

Basin City (usually known as Sin City) is somewhere in the United States of America, and is split down the middle by the River Dax.
There are rail and road-bridges joining the two halves,
but most of the freight traffic is still delivered in railroad cars floated across
the river on barges, pushed and pulled by small tugs called “Tow-boats”.

Ingleferry Wharf depicts one such operation.
It is set in the dock-side area of Sin City, and is probably not a part of town
that you would want to be lost in after dark. Freight cars arrive and are repositioned
on the barge for their next destination.

I hope you enjoyed your visit to Ingleferry Wharf. The layout will be appearing at the Inverness(Scotland) Model Railway exhibition on 20th September for its first public showing

Very ingenious Jack! Most excellent, love the foam in the water behind the tugboat. Is this HO standard gauge? The use of magnets to hold things together so they can easily be taken apart is a great idea!

Jack,
Excellent solutions to this challenge, I like how you connected the parts of the layout. I also like using the table cloth for water.
I am still on this side of the pond messing around with hinges to swing the parts open and your done!
Good luck at the show, how do you like the trackmobile?

Very innovative, Jack. Your model work is great and the blue table cover is a nice touch.

Yes, Mike, it is HO standard gauge. It is 50.25" long by 10.6" across the dockside (slightly under 4 sq ft in all). The towboat has a piece of clear packing from one of my wifes cosmetics glued beneath to help it slide, and the "foam" is clear silicone bathrom caulk on that plastic, pulled into peaks as it sets, and then those peaks painted white. The river is an old blue plastic tarpaulin that has seen better days(that doesn't go in the box!) River Lady is a kit from http://www.bluejacketinc.com/honscale.htm and has a loose roof to enable it to be fitted into the box. It was a bit like designing "pack-flat furniture" to enable various bits to fit in space between other bits - even one of the containers has to have its bottom removed to fit it into a space. Track power to the carfloat is fed through 2 magnetic connectors in the end of the float-bridge,and 4 in the end of the carfloat. The undersides of the sections have tiny computer wiring plugs to take the power across the joins. There are one or two bits and pieces that can be added, but I felt it had reached the point where I wasn't ashamed for it to be seen. Thanks everybody for your kind comments - I do appreciate them.
PS The trackmobile is a great little piece of kit!

Shortliner,

Nice work. I thought the challenge had died but you guys were just working silently in the background. Looking forward to seeing more displays.
