How about showcasing your favourite(s) as they fulfill their "workhorse" duties on your layout! While I love the F-units, I've chosen to showcase Alco switcher S1 #1170 as railfanned near the town of North Dover on my B&M/MEC layout. Check out my railfanning pics at www.bostonandmaine.blogspot.com where you'll see this little black brute in action. Also, check out the posting on my weblog below the Alco one where you'll see B&M GP9's #1701 and #1746, a pair of Bluebirds in action in and around North Dover as well. Your post really tugged at my heart because I rode 1170 in Nashua,NH as a boy in the early 1970's.She was blue by then.I also rode SW1 1119 which was painted in the maroon scheme.1119 was the first engine I had a cab ride,1170 the second.I have a lot of good memories of those years from 1969 to 1974.A lot of good people worked for the B&M in that area and I also got to know some of the people running the businesses that the B&M served in Nashua.Thanks for sharing your photos.1170 and 1119 are both gone,as are the people I knew,but all live on in memories. Hey Mark, I visited your website and your layout is awesome! It's fun to see the scenery developments as you've gone along. I noticed some diesels there as well! Bill, I'm really touched by your comments. It's nice to see how modelling a railroad can not only bring back what the line looked like, but the impression it left on others...and, in your case...the boyhood excitement of being up close to a train! I chose to model the B&M because our family used to camp in the northeastern states, although we lived in Montreal at the time. I recall being excited when dad found a campground beside the railroad tracks! And, all too often it was either the B&M or the Maine Central! Your layout is unique because of its versatility and simpleness while at the same time having some interesting switching situations. I also like the way you have balanced its features. I wanted to gain a feel for the verdant landscape of New England, but I also wanted that industrial look...and I feel that I've accomplished both. Going around the layout room, you change from urban to industrial to "outskirts" to rural...an artistic challenge, but lots of fun! For operations, I also ensured a fair balance of trailing and facing sidings with the inclusion of two passing sidings in town for runaround purposes. You mentioned interchange. It's funny, my layout was visited by the Prez in his business car the "Alaska"...a specific HO car that has made the rounds internationally and has even appeared on the set of the television show "The West Wing".
