FOR THE SCRATCHBUILDER OR RESEARCHER

The posts which follow comprise Reg Shaeffer's now-famous series, "The Sawmill Chronicles," which ran in the Gazette between July '84 and May '86.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the series, Reg Shaeffer described how he built CHB's highly detailed - and highly complex - sawmill machinery and detail castings. For many readers who had bought the CHB kits, the series was a godsend.

Although the kits have been long out of production, the information and research Reg provided about sawmills in the series remains a benchmark for many logging modelers. Even today, some 16 years after the final installment was published, reference is frequently made in other logging articles to "The Sawmill Chronicles."

In summary, the articles are typically 2-4 pages in length and contain model photos and drawings. Some are more detailed than others. If you are looking for a complete description of sawmill equipment and its operation, these are the articles for you. For the sake of simplicity and to allow others to comment on any given part of the series, I have listed each part separately.

Moderator's note added on 3/1/03: Brett Gallant, owner of Sierra West Scale Models, recently announced that he has purchased CHB Models and will be re-releasing the entire O scale line of sawmill machinery and equipment referred to in Reg Schaeffer's series of articles.
