Hello, I've been following along on the site for a while, and I thought I'd share my current project.



The Saccara Valley RR is currently a 4' x 2' module. I built it to the CSCModOn30 standards, with hopes to one day meet up with them. It is set in southwest Arizona, the Sonoran Desert, in the 1910s. I've been admiring the work of others on the site, and I'm sure you'll see the influence.

The current layout is quite simple, a mainline with siding, a small station, and a corral. The track is all handlaid (my first major attempt at that), the structures are scratch built, and the scenery is largely carved foam covered in plaster gauze.

The station is built of foam core walls, covered in plaster. The trim is wood, and the roof and floor tiles are made from plastic sheet. I'll post more detailed pictures, including the interior, in the future. The structures were built before the layout, on hobby plywood. They are removable, and the edges of their bases haven't been blended in yet.





The corral, "Hell's Leap", is built of wood strips. The ramada still needs covering, and I plan to replace the rope pieces with some smaller thread.







There is still a lot of scenery work to do, more plants, more rocks, more cacti (made of self hardening clay), more details, etc. I'm considering reworking some of the large central hill/rock formation, as the upper right corner seems to sharp to have sand and dirt instead of a rock face.
Also, the backdrop is from my N scale layout. I'm using it here for the pictures, so please disregard any N scale building flats that may appear in the images... I also need to work on layering images to correct the focus issues, but these give an idea of what I'm working on.

Saccara Valley has a new (unofficial) law man. As he is the only citizen with a gun, he calls the shots.




He is from an ebay user called "hot.racer" - a search for "railfolk miniatures" will bring you to the right place. This figure is called "Frisco Pete". They arrive as unpainted metal. I'm quite pleased with the casting detail, I'm looking forward to the next batch of figures from this shop.

Good call on the height of the ocotillos. The tallest one so far is about 2" or 8'. Definitely have some room to grow some taller ones.

The rattlesnakes will follow...

Looking good! One suggestion... most "full-grown" ocotillos are 8-10 feet tall, sometimes more. Of course there are usually some smaller, immature ones around too.

I've been researching and working on various methods for creating realistic Sonoran Desert vegetation. When I began this project, my first attempts at plant life involved a set of Pegasus Hobbies Cactus models, and some saguaro cacti made out of modeling clay.




Here is a quick overview showing some of the original plants.



I've been trying to create convincing ocotillo plants. The stalks are made from strips of stranded electrical wire bunched together. After a liberal coating of white glue, I dipped the plants into misc ground cover materials to get a greenish color I felt looked somewhat natural. I then dipped the tips of the stalks into some red ground covering to represent flowers.



This shot shows an attempt at an agave plant (front center). This was made from a few dollhouse potted plants from Michaels. Each potted plant comes with 15 or so leaves, for $3. I picked up a handful and spent an afternoon experimenting. I think they could be formed a bit tighter, but I'm pleased with the placeholders for now.


The small cactus wren, from Pegasus Hobbies "Farm Animals" set, is a bit hard to see in this picture. I also added on to the tall saguaro beside this plant. I think they are slightly oversized, but that's alright

I also received a few figures from SMR Trains and am waiting on a few from an ebay user called hot.racer who makes metal figures (search for Railfolk Miniatures on ebay). When they arrive, I will post some pictures. The look pretty nice, and will add some life to this desert.

Thanks again for the comments. I've been working on the vegetation lately, trying to add location specific plant life. The research has been interesting ... the execution is still an exercise in patience. I'll try to add some photos lately. I've been studying the work of Los Arizona Desperados closely. They seem to have nailed it the look perfectly!

Interesting light switch, that is now stored in my memory. The lights look fantastic, as does the station, I will be looking forward to more progress pictures.
