It is time to get the 2021 Challenge Going. We once again will have choices, choices, choices. The goal is to accumulate 2 or more Points. Although the assignment of point values is clearly subjective, we didn’t have any problems last year, so let’s give it a go.

So, here's how it works: Simply choose any combination of projects from the list below to add up to two points. The point values are listed after the project description. Once you have chosen your project(s), let us know what they are in the Challenge Thread. Then complete your selected project(s) as you have time throughout the next few months. The goal is to have them finished by Friday, April 30 2020. Work can commence immediately and I will open the Challenge Thread and Final Pictures Thread in the Mike Chambers’ Craftsman’s Corner by January 1st.

1. Build a structure from a kit. 1 Point for ‘simple’ kit, 2 Points for ‘complex’ kit

2. Kitbash a model. The goal is that the kit should be visible in the end model, i.e. you can see "this is a bash of the kit" (as opposed to "taking all the sticks and parts and producing something that looks nothing like the kit.") "Judging criteria" fir point value will include creativity and originality of the result, as well as construction. 1 Point for simple bash, 2 Points for complex bash.

3. Build and detail a piece of rolling stock from a kit. 1 Point

4. Scratchbuild a piece of rolling stock, any era, scale/gauge, from styrene, wood, or resin. 1 Point for the basic car (including lettering/numbering), 1 Additional Point for complete undercarriage and topside detailing

5. Finish an orphaned project you started and then abandoned. 1 Point

6. Create a sketch of a structure and then scratch build it. 1 Point for simple, 2 Points for complex.

7. Repaint/Refresh an old locomotive any scale. 1 Point

8. Tackle any project on your layout: benchwork, trackwork, scenery, electrical, etc. 1 or 2 Points depending on complexity

Hi everyone,

I want to join this challenge to help get my butt in gear.
I want to do 4, a scratch built tank car from the 1890s, in Z scale. Is the use of brass okay?
And 5, I also need to restart work on a barge I started a year ago.
Finally 8, I need to start bench work for my fist layout (the mini) and possibly track work.

I have scratchbuilt some stuff, just never share. So what better way to start sharing.

Hey Y’all,

Ah ain’t done a Challenge in coon’s age, but this one should give me some motivation to start and finish a coupla projects, starting with:

#7: Scratchbuilding a cotton seed storage house based on the prototype at the Elgin Cotton Oil Mill in Elgin, TX, (1 point) followed by:

#8: Completing scenery and detailing on the rural portion of the layout (1 point).

I’ll show the start of the seed house in the Main Thread.

Right......got a Simpson kit for a flat car (basically a box of wood and you supply the rest), and I'll build a copy in parallel but make that into a low side gon, and I have a little cardstock business structure that I'll just scratchbuild out of wood, GL parts, and whatever....

Should have the cars done by Feb.,

Structure gets built after I get the cars out of that bench space.

So, that's 3,4, and mostly 6?

This looks like a good challenge, Bruce.

I could do #8. I have a lot to do on my switching layout, but I'm ready for a change of pace, so I'm looking at #6. The layout needs an icing station.

Bruce, I have to paint the locos first. They are that ugly factory gray resin color. Going through the pile I also came across a couple of undecorated cabooses, boxcars, hopper, and coaches. I even have a couple of unlettered steam locos and a couple I want to change from their factory road name to something I model. Hmmm, this could be the motivation I need.

Thanks,Jim, but my sleeper began with commercial etched sides and a Train Station Products core kit. The interior and underbody were mixes of castings and styrene fabrication. It did earn Merit, but I'm 0/4 for scratchbuilt cars.

Tom, adding road names and perhaps some weathering on those decade old loco's would qualify as would the scenery and track replacement projects. Jump right in!

I might join in this time. I do have several structure kits laying around. None of them are too complex, however. I have to look through the abandoned projects to see if any are viable. How do you define old locomotive? I have several 10 plus year old undecorated Atlas locos sitting on the workbench. On the layout I have a bunch of stuff such as rehabbing the Water Tower Diorama to demolition of several areas that need to b done so the layout can be upgraded to 22 inch and/or 24 inch curves.

Can you do more than one section?

Didn't you scratchbuild a really good looking Passenger car last year or maybe the year before?
