I recently was given a model of a Hayes HDX-1000 Off Road Logging truck to build.

It's a resin model made by Don Mills Models. This one was started by another modeller who gave up on it and I'm starting where he left off.

The front and rear suspension and axles had been installed but the rear assembly was twisted badly and two of the axle pegs were broken off. I decided to take the rear suspension apart and re-do it.

The rear mounting pegs for the springs had to be drilled out and replaced and the glue points where the springs attach to the axles were out of square so I filed these flat and glued some styrene strip to these points. That way I was able to use some slower setting styrene cement to try to get things a bit better square.

I then glued the two springs and axles in place. I waited until these had all set up and then I glued the assembly parallel with the truck frame. I had also drilled holes in the rear axles so I can replace the wheel mounting pins.
I figure any other discrepancies can be fixed with enlarging the mounting holes in the wheels.

Finally I glued the engine and driveshaft into place. So far the re-work has taken about two days. I almost threw the rowel in last night when I couldn't get the rear suspension to work for me.

Wow, what a monster truck, that is some BIG rig. Nice job Glen!

Thanks everyone. Rich, I've got a number of truck and car kits on the docket already. I just started a Jordan 1929 tank truck that I'm converting to a tow truck for my gas station scene.

Really nice, Glen.

Youíve done a fine job, Glen.

Glen,
You do nice work. I can send you about fifty HO truck kits to build and paint, weather, etc. Just let me know when you want them.

It's a beast compared to the Con-Cor.

I sprayed a bit of Polly-s dirt over the model and I'd call it finished

and for comparison sake, her it is beside a con-cor logging truck (on road)

Thanks Carl and Mike.

I finished off assembly this morning. Last night I worked on getting the wheels on.

I started with one front wheel as a guide, then added the second front to level the truck side to side. to do this I enlarged the mounting holes on the wheels and sanded the mounting pin thinner so I could move them up and down as I needed. I then added a single rear wheel that would level the truck fore and aft. One of the rear axles was way out so I almost had to put the mounting pin into the tires to keep the truck level. This isn't going to be a contest model so I was more concerned with it sitting straight and level.

After that I added the mirrors and the front wheel mud guards and it was finished.

This afternoon I'll do some basic weathering and call it finished.

Looking good.

Thatís really nice, of course, I like the green.
Glen Haasdyk Posted - 03/23/2019 : 8:22:53 PM
Thanks everyone. I wasn't sold on the green at first (it wasn't my choice) but it looks right.

I'm nearing completion of the truck.

I hand painted the tires and applied an A&I wash to the rims.

I have almost completed assembly. I added window glass using a liquid glassmaker and then assembled the rest. The black posts are the rearview mirror posts. I'll add the mirrors after I've added the wheels due to their fragile nature.

you can also see in the background that I finished off the trailer.
