This is our prime modeling time in the northern hemisphere, and as usual, we will have a group challenge. This year we will make it a tribute to two of our recently lost friends: Frederic Testard and Chester Fesmire.

Chester was a woodworker by trade and lived in Maine. Frederic was a math professor and lived in France. Chester enjoyed the hobby by focusing on vehicle modeling, and Frederic loved scratch building and scenery work. Both produced unbelievably realistic models. Both were masters at weathering.

As is my usual approach on these challenges, I will try to keep the focus broad enough to attract a good number of participants. I we make the focus too restrictive, experience shows that participation is lower.

So, feel free to (1) scratch build a model as Frederic so often did. If you build a model from a kit (2), do what both Frederic and Chester did, and make it your own by modifying it, adding to it, weathering it, and placing it in a detailed scene. A third (3) option would be to build a vehicle model. Once again, feel free to make modifications, weather the model, and include it in a scene. Both Chester and Frederic often did. One thing that I didn't mention about Chester's modeling is that he made a few 'photo sets' in which to photograph his vehicle models. These 'sets' included wonderfully detailed interiors.

So please join the challenge. I have given you three options, but there are many more that can be inspired by the modeling of these to departed friends.

The challenge will begin now and will run thru Monday, April 15, 2019

In the next post I will include an array of photos from both Frederic and Chester to give you some more inspiration.

Mike. Nice jobs on the chute mechanism.
Must have been fiddly to do. And so many more still to be done.

I have not checked this thread for a while and missed some of the comments. I want to acknowledge Jerry, Jim, Bernd, Carl, Bob, Fred, David, Karl and Rob, for their favorable comments on my and others' models here.

Although the main structure looks finished, I mentioned above that there were details I wanted to add, mainly the chute mechanisms. I've been slowly working on these bits and added ropes, weights, and pulleys for one chute:

Here's a sketch showing how I built it:

I started with one of a new Tichy part, trimmed as shown, a hole drilled through, and a piece of styrene added to one side. The other side of the pulley snuggles against a wood beam. The weight is a piece of sprue with a hole drilled through and threaded.

Only 19 more to go.

I just found the below thread of vehicles, and Chester posted lots of photo's of his vehicles there. Sure did a lot of variety.

14 pages of wonderful vehicles.

And of course so did many others display their vehicles also.

Here's a couple of Chesters.

Rob,

I want to thank you for putting up the link to the vehicle thread, that included some of Chester's vehicles. Just looking back at all of the vehicles, I saw some that reminded me of the many telephone conversations that I had with Chester. There were also some I hadn't seen there too.

Thanks Carl & Bob. Been a very enjoyable challenge, and I appreciate you following along.
Just a shame there weren't more participants, but that;s how it goes sometimes.

Mike, the coal dock is even more impressive, the further you move along with your build.
Keep on going.

Rich, I'm still following along, and am enjoying your build so much. You've really taken the word "challenge" literally, with wanting do so much more work.

Mike,
Great job on the coal dock structure! How many feet of stripwood did you use to build it?
