If the internet gods worked in my favor, you should see a nice little building.

I often see this little building next to a restaurant my family and I frequent. It caught my eye. I was looking for a project that could be finished very quickly. Sometimes you just need that instant satisfaction of completion. First thing Saturday morning, I decided to draw it out and see what happened.

This was the result. I spent approximately one day working on this, using materials I had on hand. As I built, I realized that this could go in so many directions.

My challenge to you is to make your own version of the building. I put everything into scale feet, so no matter what size, it should work out for you. Make it yours. Make it cool. Make it quickly. Use what you have on hand, unless your going to your LHS, in which case please support them. Post your pictures here when done! Have fun!

Here is my completed model using the basic dimensions of the shed:

Itís named for a member of our local club and intended for the club layout. It will get a little dirt and weathering once itís installed.

Any more takers?

Very nice! I really like the shingle color variation.

i ended up spending a bit more time on this than intended, but now it's almost finished. it just needs a ridge cap and i'm calling it done. maybe a sign or two....

Here is the start to my adaptation of the small shed . . .

. . . a hot dog shoppe.

In case anyone is thinking "Hey, isn't he an early rail guy" this model is for the local club, set in the 1950's.

With all the gardening needing to be done as well as planning for a new kitchen, this is all in the model railroading realm I've been able to manage.

Lots of character in your little building, Kevin. We had a shed attached to our old house that I think was made of reused and leftover lumber.

Meanwhile, I have walls and have been painting window and door castings. Photos to come.

kebmo Posted - 09/03/2017 : 9:55:26 PM
scratched a door together and glued the 4 walls together. when i finish trimming it out and i'm gonna do the cedar shingles and tone the off white paint down with powders.
i decided the window would be boarded up.

Nice work Kevin!

Karl, Ed is referring to Herrs Potato Chips Company in Nottingham, PA. Not a good place to be near when you're on a diet....
UKGuy Posted - 09/02/2017 : 5:08:24 PM
Nottingham was the home of Robin, dunno who Herrs is....

Looking good Kevin, nice framing and bracing, trusses not needed, its a quickie shed build.
I do agree with you though, get back to your 'main event'.

Hum, Nottingham, home of Herrs. Pretty cool seeing the pictures. This area was one of my Martin's Potato Roll routes. I know those buildings.
kebmo Posted - 09/02/2017 : 2:59:48 PM
got a little more done this morning. 3 walls in place (not glued yet). now for the front wall with the door and window. i thought about building trusses for the roof, but hey, this is a shed challenge and i still have a box full of o'neill's fabrication to build....

kebmo Posted - 09/02/2017 : 11:20:49 AM
i used 12 feet for the side walls and 8 feet for the front/back. the two side walls are framed and sided and i'm going to sketch the front/back today. i'm building this out of scrap wood, so the colors are pretty varied. i think when all the walls are boarded i'm going to damp brush them an off-white color. i don't have any shake shingles, but i do have options. i have a package of walt's 3-tab shingles in green, and i also have some thin sheets of cedar and a paper cutter, so i might go that way. i'll cross that bridge when i get to it.

It depends on time scale, If its another 1.5hr quick build then yes its appealing, a small challenge is always good to get the modeling flowing.

If you've got something larger in mind then you are limiting participation. Especially if as you say it is a two part challenge which means again you are limiting interest and participation due to it being too specific.

As there were only a couple of participants last time then there's a very small window on how much further you can limit involvement in the challenge.

Small, quick, broad appeal, easy access..... springs to mind.

This one is a two part project, but you'll only get one part at a time.

I think waiting until the fall, would probably yield better participation results, than starting another new challenge right now.
Just my 2 cents worth.
