Dear friends,
I'm sad to announce the heartbreaking news that our friend and fellow modeler Verne Niner passed away of a heart attack on Wednesday, Nov 18. He had been having heart trouble for the passed year. Verne and I were good friends and had worked on many model railroad projects together. His family contacted me by phone and asked that I pass this sad news along to the model railroading community. My heartfelt condolences go to his wife, son, daughter, friends and extended family. Verne, you were one of the best.

I too met and had a yarn with Verne at the NNGC in Pasadena. I took his photograph as a memento as I had already been following his modelling and contributions to these Forums. A true gentleman and such a shock to hear of his passing.

I'm like Arthur and don't visit often enough and am very sad to learn of Verne's passing. I was fortunate to meet him and spend some time with him a couple of years ago at the Pasadena NNGC. Not only was Verne a great modeler but he was also a real gentleman. I've enjoyed his work on RRLine over the years, and yes Ray, his most recent Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette article was in the Jan/Feb 2014 issue. It featured his fabulous "Village of San Lorenzo" diorama, and it won the Gazette Award that year. I also remember the "Chuckwalla Slim Model T Truck" being in the Gazette a year or two before that.

Great stuff! Was any of Verne's modeling ever published in the Gazette?

Thank you--his modeling will be missed almost as much as he is--he definitely had a lot of admirers here.

Apologies for finding this thread so late- I don't read the forum as often as I should. I am very saddened- he was a very nice person and I had the chance to correspond with him briefly. His imagination and humor will be sorely missed.

Very shocking news. May Verne's family find peace as time moves on. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends.

Thanks to everyone for the comforting words. Verne was one of a kind, a true gentleman and a scholar, and one of the finest ambassadors this hobby could hope for. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him or were touched by his outstanding work. I'm so glad that his San Lorenzo village will live on at Thunder Mesa. I get a smile and think of Verne every time I look at it.

I have received a few emails from people regarding the disposition of Verne's collection. I know that some where in the process of purchasing items from Verne, and some are just curious as to what will become of the rest. As of this time, I have not been contacted by the Niner family regarding his collection and do not expect to be for some time as they continue to deal with far more pressing matters. If I am contacted, I will, of course, let the larger modeling community know.

I'm very sad to hear that news. I really liked his modelling and wanted to see more of his work. My condolences to his family and friends.

This was sudden and sad; I was following his HOn3 project. My condolences to those close to him.

Truly sad. Prayers sent for all. Verne's wit, imagination and just plain fun loving spirit will live on in what he has done. I'm glad to have 'met' him online and appreciative of what he has done for us all. Godspeed Verne, I can't wait to catch up with you.

I just saw this and I too am stunned, shocked and deeply saddened. Verne was always willing to take the time to answer my questions. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Verne will be sadly missed. A great Railroad-Line friend.

This is very sad news. I spoke with Verne for about 20 minutes a few weeks back and he told me the doctors were very happy with his progress. We were also discussing my plans to rebuild his Apache Wells scene for a show layout.

I will miss you greatly my friend, RIP and may you continue modeling in heaven.
