Greetings all!

Since I've commited myself to the 2'x3' cork board challenge, and so far have done nothing, I thought I'd start with a pair of electric locomotives to get things rolling. I've always liked industrial traction narrow gauge and decided this the project to take the plunge. The scale is On30 and they're built of styrene so far.

No. 1

Built on a Bachmann 44t truck, will be a freelance industrial critter with a trolly-pole. I may make this into a tiny boxcab or some kind of open cab thing. A boxcab would help with hiding some extra weight...

No. 2

A bit further along boxcab, very much influenced by the work I've been seeing on RRL. The mechanism is a Grandt Line GE 25t endcab (with the whole body complete, painted and weathered under the superstructure). The journal boxes are from a Jordan Mack kit. I've got the body taped together to check proportions, what does everyone think? The side walls are 6'3" tall.

I think I will use trolly poles for my line (because I think they'd be easier to scratchbuild than pantographs). I haven't thought much about colour or details yet. Just getting some ideas moving...

More soon, probably.

Love it, Cody. A very nice little engine.
acousticco Posted - 03/20/2015 : 01:57:25 AM
Thanks Gents!

Bill, it's powered with an old Bachmann power truck from a 44t diesel, so it runs okay. It's got a cracked gear at the moment (like all Bachmann engines), but I've got some spares to swap it out with.

Larry, the pipe will have the trolly pole stuck in the top once I get around to building it. I know it's not prototypical but it hides the access screw holding the mechanism in place. so I'll live with it. The coupler castings are Grandt Line, I like 'em too.

Cody, great look to the critter I really like the coupler pockets. The pipe suggests steam power so if you go electric you will have to swap that out. Bill if this critter runs like stuff Cody traded with me I would say it runs very well.

Looks good Cody.....how does it run?

A pantograph would be great, you want to build it for me? :)

I have most of the trolley pole bits picked out, just need some tiny springs and the will to assemble it...

More soon!

Naw, Cody. Needs a pantograph.

Just kidding. I'll be popping in to watch for the completion.

Not much happening these days, but I did manage to get a coat of primer on No. 1:

Still needs a trolley pole and a roof, but I like how it's coming out!

Thanks Bernd!

I added couplers to the boxcab today so it's been doing laps pulling the gondola, and looking good! I have to paint the interior (of both critters) before I add the roofs, but I have to wait for a nice day to spray them outside. I also bought an HO scale Athearn EMD model 40 four wheel switcher to make into another boxcab for the line, probably a gas powered one this time.

Mark, sorry I missed your question, you can see a pic of the layout here: http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=42760&whichpage=8 It's little, but it runs nice.

Cody,

The wood is looking like real unpainted wood. Very natural looking.

Can't wait to see those critter when there finished.

Thanks Gents!

In between waiting for various glues to dry I've been painting the 18' gondola:

I've been trying lately to get better at representing wood with paint, and have been practising on this car. Over the neutral primer I put down several thin washes of Polly scale 'Earth' and ink & alcohol. I drybrushed some FolkArt 'Barnwood' too for good measure. I think it's getting closer. I like the hand written number (influenced by Coaltrain). Still have to paint the trucks and I'll hopefully get to the critters soon. Comments and suggestions always welcome!

I especially like the "woodwork" on the
critter, along with great detail!!!

Cody,

Very interesting. Looking forward to seeing the finished products.

Wow Cody, I was just checking in to see what your doing and those little boxcabs are amazing! Well done! I think the idea of a little industrial traction layout is a great idea and am anxious to see what you come up with. Any track plan ideas?
acousticco Posted - 07/23/2014 : 8:37:20 PM
Like I mentioned, a bit of rolling stock has been started:

I started with a gondola, it's 18' long, about 6 1/2' feet wide, all wood with Grandt Line parts. The trucks were GL D&RGW On3 trucks that were narrowed and with HO scale 33" wheelsets installed. It's just been primed and will be painted and weathered shortly. More traction soon!

Thanks for the links, there's some good information there. I'm planning to scratchbuild my poles, for the challenge, plus I'm short on cash. This project is also part of my overall endeavour to actually use the massive amount of stuff that I've accumulated over the years!

I've started a few pieces of rolling stock for the line which I'll post once they're something to look at!
