Most of this spring I've spent my hobby time on procurement and planning. My layout is about 23 years old and needs some love. It needs its scenery refreshed, a good cleaning, buildings repaired and track maintenance. All of which has been delayed by the knowledge that I wanted to change a few things to ease maintenance, improve running, improve presentation and be more correct for my time period. The biggest change to make the layout correct for my time period will be to replace all turnouts to stub points. But here is what my current track plan kinda looks like;
The layout layout currently doesn't have any Three way switches on it. This drawing was a planning sketch that most accurately shows my original layout.
This is what I hope it will become;
As you can see the most obvious change is the orientation of the turntable roundhouse. But also the passing track at Beaver Hill has been moved so that the south turnout is reachable for maintenance. The same reasoning lead to the log dump entry being moved.
This next view won't impress any of the fine craftsman here but it show me testing these drawing on the layout to see if they would actually work. It appears that they will;
The next step is to see exactly how much room my new turntable will take. So I will now take time to build it and escape the mud bog that planning can become. I'm using Freshwater Models' Sellers Turntable kit. Here's a progress shot;
As this kit is no longer made and Dave and Craig have already ran detailed building treads on this kit (which I have found very helpful) I'll just share progress shots here and then.

A lot of progress and ideas since I last visited. Lots of great scenes in the making!
I have been away from the forum for a week, I guess summer has come with other occupations :-)

I thought I might share some of my planing with you. Let me start with this partial view of my track plan.
If you compare this view with the earlier plans you'll see several changes. The most noticeable is the extension of the logging branch which was originally ending behind the round house. On the old layout this position was behind the Slaughter House about 15" from the edge of the layout providing an acceptable view of the donkey engines. In the new plan this location became about 30" which was too far and undesirable for viewing the planed details. This extension will allow for better viewing of these high interest items. I'll also get the bonus of being to add some interesting passovers including a trestle over a trestle. It will also give me a place to maybe locate the logging camp closer to view. Originally planed to go between the A-frame (the recently reinstalled one) bridge and the log fill it might now go between the two tracks right under the the number 11 in the above drawing. where ever it ends up here the working drawing for the log camp;
Let me also talk about some of my Wharf ideas.
If you look at the above track plan between the "station" and "control" text you see a symbol representing the wharf. This is my General Wharf. There will also be a lumber wharf and a Marshfield Wharf. The first the major shipper of LCL freight and my only real exchange point on this end of my Railroad while the lumber wharf will be the the major shipping point. Lumber being our biggest freight and export item. Anyway this General Wharf is going to have two level like the C.P.'s Sacramento Wharf. Here's a picture to refresh your memories with;
This will allow easier transfer of freight to my rail cars and teamsters. The last seven inches of this wharf will have a warehouse siting on it that will look something like this;
In light of the new kit kit out for a huge wharfhouse maybe I should call this one #2 hook. On the front above the doors will be a sign LIKE this;
Well I guess this is quite enough!

As you might of noticed my new track plan calls for new track where there is currently no bench-work to support the hidden trackage and staging(and maybe further extension). Three and a half hours of labor and Walla!,new bench-work. All level too.
Thanks for stopping buy, now you can return to the usually impressive work found elsewhere on this great forum.
But, excuses me, it is late into my "night" and I must get some rest.

I'm sorry; I guess I'm seeing more than is there 'cause I know were it's going. Wish I could draw. It might help you all understand what I see. But, please keep watching as the gaps fill in.
Update on the turntable. The new drive solved most of the problem and when I raised the turntable 4 scale inches solved the rest. It now turns nice and smoothly. now to find a crank handle and a universal joint for 1/8" shaft without getting shafted on the price. |

Congrats! With all of the destruction surrounding the new efforts, it's a bit hard to visualize what you're seeing in the "disaster relief effort" to follow ... but will keep following along and look forward to those "ah-ha, so that's where he's going moments!" Meanwhile, nice neat picture of the improved gearing!  |

Turntable drive part DEUX.
After sleeping on it, on closely examined the first drive and found that when I had drilled the spur for the larger drive staff I hadn't got it straight Which put a slight curve in the worm. Which accounts to jerky operation. So I rebuilt it with the other worm drive that came with the gears assortment. Here' the finished second drive;
IT runs a lot better and smoother. |

I also worked on the turntable's drive;
It works but is not smooth. I might go back to finger strong as Dallas put it. I want to add a u-joint of some kind to this and about a 3" knob but if it won't work smoothly I might not bother hunting up these items. I'll have to think about this one. |

The Bridge is back!
Remember! measure twice.
This A-frame serves the logging line of Dean Lumber who is are our main shipper. This bridge was kitbashed form a narrow gauge kit. I remember it as a fun project while the baby napped.

Dave, I've read and reread your build of this roundhouse and found your experiences very valuable. I really appreciate you taking the time to publish it.
Håkan, As I stated above I'm really encourage by how well this test shot came out. When I pick-up the blue in the sky, put the mountain and forest back in. It's going to look just super and at the same time wouldn't hardly be notice behind the round house with a few engines sitting in the sun or the machine shops or the 100's of feet of Wharfs in the foreground. I think it is going to look good in time-the Good Lord Willing.

I can imagine that large Roundhouse with some locomotives in front. Sure will make a great scene!

From the same vantage point of the last posted picture I did a Mock up to see how closely the model would match my "vision";
I'm very pleased with the results (other than the blurred image). The roundhouse's flat roof really opens the view nicely I think.
