Walt made a limited re-run of this kit and I took the opportunity to grab one.

Moving on to avoid the dreaded "cannot edit" problem.

Very nice setting, Don. Maybe the yellows are a bit bright (but under the strong light it's not easy to tell). Anyway, I like the greens. Maybe you could add a bit of vertical vegetation too.

Hi, Elliott -- here are a couple. Wish I was a better photographer.

Earlier in the thread, I said the scenery colors were too bright and that's probably true - but I've come to like them so they're probably not going to get the tone-down wash I was planning to apply. We'll see. If I make more changes, I'll post more pictures.

Thanks,

Don

Thank you, Arthur.

I see you're from Boston. My family is (mostly "was")in that area - Salem, South Hamilton. The first address I learned (so I could be returned if I went astray) was "67 Carlton Street, Boston, Mass". I spent many happy hours riding the MTA with my Aunt Elsie - a Boston schoolteacher.

Very nice and well done!

I finally did wrap up this nice little project.

When I remade the water valve thingie one more time, I used epoxy and I imbedded a piece of spring bronze wire in it, so it could withstand "FreeMo module service."

I made two, just to be on the safe side. Here they are:

And here it is installed, with the model on the dual-gauge module:

I've gotten lots of compliments on this little mini-diorama. I cheerfully recommend this kit to anyone who wants a neat and not too time-consuming project that will really add interest to a layout.

Don, a great model and a great thread.

Don, 18 times and you're out. This 16 and your original 2 tries!

First, I have to commend Walt on his blindingly-fast service. He must read customer's minds and mail their stuff two days before they order it. I got a big order of shingles within three days of placing the order through his website.

So a couple of days ago, I e-mailed him asking for a replacment for the Water Lever, which I kept breaking. It arrived yesterday - yay!

But I asked him for A replacement. This is what he sent:

RSSM Water Tank replacement water lever

This seems to indicate a certain lack of confidence on his part about my ability to make this repair.

I share Bruce's enthusiasm for Ground Goop and would have used some if I had a batch on hand. I gave all my ingredients to Vagel for use on his layout, since he's doing a lot of scenery work. It's truly great stuff.

But I must say, I've really come to like the Scenic Express plaster cloth, too. It was very easy to use, hardly created any mess, and set up very quickly.

I did one more little (almost overlooked) chore on the water tower - I painted the outside "FreeMo Green".

More later, while I'm building the new Water Lever.

Thanks for the comments!

Bruce,
When I am ready, you can push some Goop around on my layout!

Don,
Nice work!

Don, the scenery around the tank looks terrific. Being a fan of Ground Goop, and usually having some mixed up and saved, I would probably filled in those gaps around the logs with Goop. However, the plaster wrap did indeed do the job, too. (I shamelessly push Goop at every turn.)

No, Greg - I'm much too young to remember Petticoat Junction. You must be verrrrrry old.

Well, I'm almost done with the Water Tower.

I had way too much fun with that scenery learning kit and it probably shows. I just tried out everything in the kit plus everything I bought on a recent field trip to Scenic Express. We got marigolds! We got goldenrod! We got flowering shrubs! (Even I must admit that some of the color contrasts are a bit strong.)

As usual, I painted all the plastercloth with earth-colored latex paint and then sprinkled on sifted construction sand to create a base:

Water tank Raised Piainted earth added sand

The tank in the photo above is still "up in the air". In the photo below, it has been pushed down through the bed logs and glued into its normal working location.

Water tank Lowered Adding toupees

Bob VanGelder did a DVD for Scott Mason on scenery. In it,he describes a way of making the "understory" by pulling polyfiber out really thin, spraying it with hairspray, and sprinkling on ground foam. After it has dried, you cut out pieces and glue them down. I made a bunch of pieces with different foams - I thought they looked rather like toupees so that's how I refer to them. I used toupees to get scenery into the tight places under the platform.

After I had the platform down and glued, I started having fun with the scenry materials I had on hand. Here are some pictures:

I really liked the Woodland Scenics field grass, but the photo's made it clear that I had made the clumps too tall. Since taking the pictures, I've trimmed it down to about one scale foot and also added a bunch more clumps.

Sam Swanson taught me a trick for finishing structures. He mixes white glue and water about 1:6 and tints the glue mixture with a grey* acrylic paint - very thin. Brushing that over a structure evens things out and ties everything together. I don't see why it wouldn't work on scenery and I'm going to try it on this project once everything is dry.

*(You could use colors other than grey and probably should - but I'm going to try grey this time.)

One other little setback - I broke the water lever once again, while doing scenery work, and this time, it's too far gone to fix. Walt is sending me another one and I think I'll try to make it stronger when I build it. Maybe I'll saturate with epoxy, or hide a brass wire inside the wood, or (shudder!) replace the wood shaft with styrene.

I told Walt that any kits that go on my module have to survive a 30 mph barrier impact.

I'll do one more update once it's really and truly finished.

Edit: Almost forgot. The Jordans were done by Jordan-Meister Karl Osolinski.

And the boxcar was lent to me by my shop partner, Garth Jones.
