Posted - 03/29/2012 : 9:18:55 PM Breaking News: The bridge at Goshawful Gulch has been washed out due to the sudden snowmelt in the Cuspidor Mountains. Now the folks in Slapneck cannot drive into Teaspoon Corners for supplies, they have to travel by rail through Corkscrew Canyon, adding hours to the trip. The Braintrust at the Olde & Weary Railway has issued an order for all speeders, railcars and Critters to get to the yard at Forlorn Flats A.S.A.P!!! Translation: Since there seems to be enough interest, I'd like to begin a railcar or railtractor aka "Critter" challenge. The challenge is open to all scales, will begin on April 1st and end May 31st. The rules are simple, build a railcar or tractor (kits, scratchbuilt, etc) featuring automotive or aircraft parts, on an operating Rail Chassis. Bonus points are given if you model it in On30. |

Posted - 04/18/2012 : 10:06:25 PM Well, I haven't gotten much work done on my build, the early spring here has been keeping me busy, but I did manage to find the Tatra kit, Here's the link:http://www.lfmodels.com/tatra-dm-444001-p-218.html |

This thread has a lot of photos of lorries adapted to run on rails (mostly standard gauge and Russian gauge) from the Second World War. Most are German and based on German lorries but there are some Russian pictures based on the GAZ (Ford AA). http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=152720&sid=3045ead735dfc068c981b2b9d9666a93
And this company has quite a lot of 1:48 vehicle kits (actually 1:48, not 1:43). They are for military models but a fair number could be changed to civilian vehicles with a change of details and some are based on American vehicles (1941 Ford trucks etc.) http://www.wespemodels.ro/index.php?route=product/category&path=59_65
Thanks Neil for the links. Nice equipment to view. I'd like to locate this one for myself to build and motorize.

Neil, This drive has nice slow speed control. I have not run it much to check the contacts. I have to believe it will run fine as long as your track is clean. The panel van is almost the same drive just shorter and smaller wheels. It has the same motor.
Thanks for that, that is good to hear

I have that one sitting waiting to be built. I do not have the drive unit. Does anyone have experience with the drive on this one? It is another Bachmann HO MOW vehicle.
The drive unit is from the 'Fairmont' speeder and crane (the trailing cars use the frame of the two trailing wagons from the set). It is ok but benefits greatly from as much weight as you can pack it. Being a short 4 wheeled mech it is better over live frogs than dead frogs but at the same time is does a good job and is pretty well geared for speed control. I think it might be the same mechanism as the Jeep 4x4 speeder (it looks the same on the bottom).
In HO it looks better with a different top

Thanks Larry,
I have had a bit of a logistics problem with my seemingly "super-easy" Rail Truck build.
Looks great, runs beautifully, but can't handle corners very well; derails all the time.
This is due to my having the drive bogie (truck) at the front, and fixed, rather than pivoting. There is no room inside the '34 Ford frame to allow the unit to pivot, so I have just had to have a re-think....
We will see what tomorrow brings.
Thanks again, Larry.
John

Hey John, don't give up yet. The front truck most surely has to pivot to make it work and take the turns. Just try to raise the vehicle to where the front truck has room to pivot, and build the rest around that height. |

Louis, Here is the DCC on the school bus I used a TCS M1 decoder.
Remove the plastic bottom of the drive that holds the wheels in place.
Put the drive on it's side screw side up. Take out the screws and lift off the top half of the split frame.

Remove Motor.
Solder the orange and grey leads from the decoder to the motor. Connect The Black and red to the screws that held the capacitor in place. Dump the capacitor.
And you are done other than the lights.

Hey mate, how does the bus mechanism run? Does it have good slow speed control? How reliable is the electrical pickup?
I am thinking of using one of the step van mechanisms for my critter but i'm uncertain how well they run (I am assuming that the step van has more of less the same mechanism). |
