Posted - 03/24/2012 : 07:11:16 AM I will be making an Express Mail Rail truck for the L&R Railroad. Just what exactly I will be putting into this, and how it will eventually look, will play out as the construction goes forward. Here are the two items that will be used in this Rail truck construction. With Spring now here, and Summer just around the corner, we’ll see how far this gets to completion.

There are 2 parts that go wrong with them. The motor, Bachmann has replacements for these at reasonable prices. Not all of the motors went bad, so maybe you got a decent one. However, I will warn you that if the motor does its bad stuff, the magic smoke will come out of the decoder. The other thing that goes wrong is the gears split and you will notice some "skipping" while it is running, or the motor will run, but it won't be able to pull much more than itself. NWSL has replacement gears and wheels, so that part is easy. I am glad you did not let that stop you as it may end lasting a long time. I have replaced the innards to my 44 tonner with the new single motor with flywheels and I have the leftover chassis. One truck is fine, the other has the dreaded motor issue and split gears. I plan on building a critter of my own and using the good one, hopefully, it will stay good. Keep up the good work. Regards, Vic Bitleris
Thank you very much Vic. I'm glad you posted about NWSL replacement gears. That is a good option to know about. The truck runs so well, that I'd like to do all I can to keep it that way. I know Bachmann's split gear stories well. I own alot of Bachmann steamers, and for having great looking locomotives right out of the box, you would think they would help their company by using better gears. Anyway, thanks for your comments and great information. |

Louis, IMPRESSIVE, that is some nice shots of the railtruck. Yeah I like it pulling some stuff too. Thanks for the shots, I get an idea of how big it is. So how does it run? smooth?
Les
Thanks Les, and yes it runs very well and quite smooth as well. I've been told though that the 44 Tonner drives run well for a while than crap out. So, time will tell. I'm hoping that he just had a bad one, and it won't be a problem for me. However, it is easy enough to change out if I have to. Thanks again for all your help. I have another build that I'm going forward with soon, and would appreciate you following along for advise.

Louis, true test, how it looks running on the layout. TO COOL. Looks like you’r already having too much fun running it.I think you should at least do a light weathering to finish it off. Dave Tug & Grunt
Thanks Dave. Yes, it is a hot little sh*t running around. My wife thinks it's the coolest piece of equipment on the layout. I talked about the weathering in the closing pictures post. Previous Page.

I have come to the end of the trail on this HO scale Rail truck build. It has been a fun and joyful construction. And I thank Les, and many others for their suggestions and pointers. For the most part it is finally finished. A few tweaks here and there, and some weathering would help. It was really well worth the effort put into this Rail truck, once I saw it running around the layout. Hands down it needs a sound decoder placed into it. So, I once again tap in to the retirement check. Thanks for following along, and all the great encouraging comments. I will post pictures of it on the layout with a box car in-tow, as Les requested But, these will be still photos, as I am not into videos or know anything about how to go about them. Enjoy!
