Well after a 20 year from Model railroading I am back. I have always loved Shays and decided to do a logging railroad using standard HO. I have a large basement That has been dedicated to My hobbies. So I gutted part of the basement and I am doing a 25'x 20' plan. I kind of did a make up as I go layout. I had a basic Idea but it changed several times. I have a logging area that will eventually have a logging camp and a Saw mill at the other end. he logging main line is 2 reversing loops. I also have a separate main line that is joined into the logging loops. Here is a basic drawing of what I have. The blue lines are the logging loops and the red is the lower loop.

Hey Guys,
You can't have a sawmill without sound. Here is one way to do it... Here is the website I got my file from. They have alot to choose from: http://www.sounddogs.com You can search for about any sound...

Here is a video of it in my sawmill http://youtu.be/J0N1n7zYzto

I started on my Saw Mill complex. I need to get it together so that I can see how it will fit in the area. ts a pretty large complex. I have the Saw mill kit and also all the out buildings. I am trying to paint and weather them as I go.
They are the Walthers Conerstone series Sawmill.

Hey Guys
Wow Its been a long time since I posted on this thread. But I kind of got side tracked. Starting at the first of May I built a G Scale Modular Railroad. I still have alot of work to do on it but I really enjoyed the build so far.
I have not totally neglected this lay out. I have been doing a little at a time. I Have added more hills and ground work around the corner and another large hill/mountain with 2 more tunnels.
Over the past week I have started adding some base foam to the Sawmill area.
Here are some pic's to catch me up to my current stage of construction...

BTW here is the Modular that I built:

I am using a mixture of trees I made and trees I bought a couple years ago. I was lucky and bought out a hobby shop of all the trees they had. I got good mix from 4"-10" about 300 in all..I painted the whole Mountain a Earth Brown. I then covered it with the moss that I ground up in the food processor. I used some zip texture for the dirty around the cabins.

I then worked on the scenery for the whole mountain. I had to finish off the tunnel entrances . I used a mixture of rock molds and Skulpt-a-mold.

Once the cabin was painted. I finished up the rock formation in front of the cabin. I wanted to place the cabin but still be able to remove it later without any problems. So I put the cabin in plastic wrap. I then took Skulpt-a-mold and applied it around the cabin. I pressed it in tightly around the plastic. I then let it dry.

Here is a pic of the early placement of the cabin.

First I painted the cabin using acrylic paints. I have it almost all done here. I just have a few more detailing to do.

I have been working on the mountain. I bought a small cabin casting from Rusty Rail for the mountain. I bought several of their castings. They are great in detail but the ones I got. One was incomplete like the resin did not get into all of the areas of the casting. The cabine was all intact but had a couple small air bubbles that had to be filled...

Ok I have not forgotten this thread. I had a order to get out from my old hobby. I have been working along but have not had time to post anything...
I am not an artist. It just amazes me some of the backgrounds I have seen painted by modelers. I have several how to pain background videos but I just can seem to get whats in my mind onto the wall. So I am trying to keep my background very basic.

Here I have continued down to my first mountain with the background.

Thanks for the respose. I have been reluctant to dive in and do the shingles.
Im looking to get away from working on locos for a while so i should jump back on this project.

Really enjoying this railroad of yours also. Its nice to see a HO logging layout for a change over the usual On30

Oh BTW I used the double sided 3m Tape to apply the shingles instead of the 3m77 spray and I used a medium CA to apply the ridge cap.
The CA made the ridge cap go pretty quick.

Thanks for the comments.
Yes I followed his directions on painting the shingles. If you use the last 3 colors one after the other they mix very well. I would do all 4 sheets of shingles with one color of polly and then move to the next color and do all 4 sheets. The colors did not get totally dry and mixed well.

Im working on the same kit at the moment. Found the same issue with my first bunk and manage to correct it on the next ones.
I hvaent done the roof of any yet. Love the coloring on the shingles. Is it just the same as following bretts instructions

Outstanding job of coloring, looks like real wood. I can almost hear the Shantyboys inside telling tall tales and someone playing a fiddle softly. Very nice!

TY, you're definitely getting some good colors on your walls and roof.
Great job of assembly too.
