Posted - 02/29/2012 : 2:49:36 PM Hotel Martin (pronounced in the Romance fashion with the emphasis on the second sylable like Martin Brodeur's first name) is my solution to a problem.
In another thread I have described the Hotel Marre which will sit at the base of my pier. The problem is that, after much research and study, I do not think that my current modelling skills are good enough to produce a satisfactory model of a signature structure. My pier warehouse is the first scratch-built structure in over 40 years and in it's detail and finish, it is comparatively crude.
The other town on my planned railroad, San Luis, also has a hotel. by the depot. and I have decided to modify my plans for it, so that it will mostly fit the footprint of the Hotel Marre and can stand in for it until I feel confident enough to tackle that building. Thus the Hotel Martin was born.
I obtained a Bar Mills #1 kit from BigLars in a trade and I planned to use that for the two upper floors of the Hotel Marre and to that end, I cut windows and doors for it. I am now convinced that I will need to do better with the Hotel Marre, so I am going to use those walls for the Hotel Martin and I have added a couple of doors so that the structure makes more sense. |

Posted - 03/10/2012 : 12:06:14 PM Thanks Martin. I'm using slate shingles, so using the shingles to cover the caps won't work.
Painted heavy aliminum foil as metal flashing. Does that sound sensible?
EDIT: DUH, use Google and find out how REAL slate roofs are made. |

Posted - 03/10/2012 : 11:04:30 AM Depends on what you want John, sometimes I do cover the ridges with paper and paint them as where they metal, sometimes I use the shakes set to each other, sometimes aluminiumfoil tape, there are lotta options..

Posted - 03/10/2012 : 10:11:08 AM A kind of bump.
I still need help with how to cover the ridges when using the Rusty Stumps shingles. What does one do?
Do I need to draft lines on the subroofing to align the strips? They seem to come out very slightly crooked, I put in 6 rows as a test and was about 0.4mm off parallel.
I have ordered some chimneys and other bits from CCC. |

Posted - 03/09/2012 : 4:37:58 PM Frederic. The home I was talking about was New Zealand, where I spent the first 30 years of my life. It's a long way from Nowhere (Nowhere: Large continental land mass located 1200 miles to the WNW of New Zealand ) and even further from what passed for civilization at the time, usually three months by sea. |

Posted - 03/09/2012 : 4:33:45 PM It's funny, John. Here in Europe we are always ordering from overseas and having the same kind of feelings. We should compare our lists and providers, maybe that would decrease traffic upon the ocean...

Posted - 03/09/2012 : 4:16:36 PM Thanks for the suggestion, but I'd like to find something in the USA. I spent many years back home ordering things from overseas and dealing with the wait and customs and the wait and the postal service and the wait.......... |

Posted - 03/09/2012 : 3:28:41 PM I have some LP and benches on order. Looking for laser cut rockers (chairs!)
I've looked at the shingles. Excellent. How do I handle the ridge caps?
Thanks Troels. I was inspired by the style of many of your structures. |

Posted - 03/09/2012 : 2:46:33 PM Thanks for your help and advice too. I hope the pronunciation is correct.
I'm following my own advice and building more and more to hone my skills and learn the limits of my abilities. |

Posted - 03/09/2012 : 2:34:55 PM Thanks Walt (Rusty Stumps) the shingles have arrived. Fastest response from a supplier yet.
I will read the plans and practice a little. One day earlier and I would have used them on the Depot Closet. |

Posted - 03/05/2012 : 09:00:41 AM Thanks guys. That sign is at about the limit of my skill set at the moment. If anyone knows of better signage fonts, I'd like to hear about them.
Frederic, I'm sure I've seen some shop kits that would easily do Avila Inn, and Banta's Oilton Club Saloon captures the look of the larger place.
Larry. I think my problem with the verandah posts is that they are too close together for the size of the wood. Nothing I can do at the moment, but I learned something. Thanks. |
