I have chosen to model (sort of) the warehouse on the Port San Luis pier for my challenge project for the following reasons:

a. I need it to put on my pier.

b. I have good elevations, photographs, including those of the warehouse under construction, and information about construction method and wood sizes.

c. I am under the {possibly deluded) impression that it will be fairly straight-forward.

d. Learn/practice/remember techniques for building my pier.

My pier is about 1/2 as long and 2/3 as wide as the prototype, so I plan to cut the warehouse down from 13 x 18' bays to 7 x 18; bays by leaving out three pairs of warehouse bays (3 door and 3 blank wall sections) This will reduce the length to 126 feet (about 32")

The width will be reduced from 60' to 40' (10")amd the track will run down the center. The prototype has a curve in the track towards the sea end so the end doors do not line up.

The warehouse seems built from using a modified post and girt frame, with roof trusses, so there are no posts/supports breaking up the interior except for the framing in the two-storey office section.

The lumber is 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10" but I'm going to use undersize 1 1/2, 3, 4 1/2, 6, and 9 not the least of the reasons being that's what I can get.

I'm building the model in the condition it was when it was built, shortly after it's predecessor burned down in 1915. It will be new and freshly painted, so i'm not staining the wod or distressing it. Genteel decrepitude has it's place, but I modelling my railroad near the height of the oil boom and at its most prosperous.

The last stick-by-stick model I built for indoor use was in Sn3 1/2 and over 40 years ago.

My N scale construction is all plastic/styrene or laser-cut wood, and the stick-by-stick glueless techniques I use for my outdoor railroad (router and pin-nailer are my very good friends) will not work on wood this small (unless someone has a router bit set of 1/16" dovetails)

BTW, if snyone has a clue what the roofing material was when the building was new, or is now or at any other time in the past, I would like to know, because I don't at the moment.

Thanks Verne for your opinion, that's what I wanted.

The Under Construction/Under Repair choice still exists and the 'static/dynamic' problem is handled to a certain extent by having the crew at rest, having lunch.

There's a small stack of corrugated iron up there and some wood, so the viewr can draw their own conclusions.

John, it comes down (I think) to what you want and like. I think the base paper on the roof looks convincing, but I am not generally a fan of 'under construction' scenes as I prefer to model trains and structures in their normal state. It's a bit like modeling figures...I would avoid having figures running, as I don't want to depict a 'freeze frame' image, but instead what is average and commonly seen.

That being said, perhaps repairing the roof would be an effective alternative, but that's entirely up to you...those flat roofs probably required a fair amount of maintenance. I know you want to repaint the crew, which will help, I have always found WS figures to look a bit puffy and cartoonish compared to Arttista, Buffalo Landing, etc. With the right finishing and the tools and materials around them, it could be a convincing mini-scene.

That you would tackle such a huge project...and pull it off so well as a 'first structure' says a lot about your ability and skill. I am sure whatever you come up with for the finishing touches will look great.

Do you think the unfinished roof/work crew thing works??

Andy is right, what a cool, enormous structure. Well done, John!

have you tired these guys?
http://www.interhobmodels.com/index.html
they seem to be the go-to people for british stuff and they stock duncan models, or are owned/handeled by S&D models who make edwardian/victorian figures, i bet they have them or can get them for you :)
Schoolmaster Posted - 03/11/2012 : 10:48:12 AM
Yes Andy, WS, but I'm going to have to repaint them anyway, they are far too modern in attire and I need some hats.

It seems that the vast majority of Edwardian/Victorian figures are made in the UK/Europe, so it may take a while to find what I need.

I'm glad I started big. It's easier in a strange way. I have two more buildings planned for my layout that will be a little bigger!

The Grain Warehouse is just as wide, 40 feet, but the real one is 350 feet long and I was thinking of a model 160 feet long, 16 pays. The three track Coach Shed is 45 feet wide and I'm thinking of 120 feet in length, ten bays, and thr 40 foot by 104 foot warehouse/depot is only a little smaller, although not as tall or bulky.

I've had a blast building it.

ive said it before, and i'll say it again, that thing is HUGE :D

are the figures woodland scenics? ive found a quick wash with thinned black /very dark brown really brings out the detail, the "flat" paint job they come with does nothing for them.

Here are the 'final' photos for the pier warehouse and the pier deck as far as I have completed it. I need to do work on the LP crew.

I've used Squadron Putty, both white and green, a lot. Should have thought of that myself.

I can punch and form hats from thin sheets of putty, I just need to find something to copy.

Thanks teaspoon.

"Never used clay in that way. How would I bake it, the plastic LP would melt?"

Maybe I could try an epoxy putty? I have no confidence in my sculpting skills.
John have you considered "green stuff" it is what most gaming figures are sculpted from before being mass produced. I have used "Sculpy" polymer clay for stumps, etc. You have to bake it per manufacturers instructions, but it does give of a slight plastic odor when baking. I have seen sheet styrene used for hats etc also. Here is a link with a brief tutorial: http://www.bananaking.net/cento/workshop/conv_green.htm

Another day, another bunch of deck done.

I should finish thie half tomorrow.
Schoolmaster Posted - 03/08/2012 : 9:32:43 PM
Today's decking, almost run out of stained wood.

The longest segment is about 12" long (on a 48" deck.)

Just to show I'm working on the deck as well.

Looking at the six specific figures in the photo, can you make suggestions?

John,

The pier is looking good, it's going to be quite impressive when finished.

As for painting the people I tend to use muted colors in the red, brown, blue range. for hats what about using clay?
