Its now a GP38-3, but it was rebuilt from a Southern Pacific GP35.
If anyone knows it would be greatly appreciated!!

Posted - 04/30/2012 : 10:58:07 PM The Rail Power shell is actually a 1b2, it has the longer inertial grill and 7 latched doors. Nobody has made a 1a1 with the short grill and nobody makes the part although it may be possible to slice & dice a Cannon intake grill and shorten it.
Kato makes a "1a" that is actually a 1b2. Kato's 1b is actually a 1b1 I believe, and Kato's 1c is a 1c1. I should point out that Kato's model was made before David did this extensive phase mapping, so they're not really out of line - just a bit confusing.
Diesel phases are a railfan designation to differentiate spotting features. The sort of unspoken rule is that phases denote production changes, not options - but sometimes options (like the extended cab on GP30s) turn into phases. There's no hard and fast system for determining phases and generally the person who first maps out all the phases and documents them with production dates and a full roster gets to designate them. David Thompson's breakdown of the GP35 is one of the more detailed ones out there.
I think Scott Chatfield "owns" the phasing for GP7s and GP9s... as Ed Ryan does for C39-8s, Dave Hussey for GP50s and GP60s, etc.

Thanks for posting Rick. Now I know what the meaning of "Phase" is in locomotives. We are never to old to learn something new. |

Posted - 01/02/2012 : 10:42:48 AM If I think what you are asking, is what can be used to make this locomotive? I would say its a GP-35 shell from Rail Power Products and that is most likely the Non Dynamic used. The kit comes as Dynamic or Non Dynamic.
