I'll start an early rail thread. This will be for posts about rail cars you've built, one's that have been kitbashed, scratchbuilt, resin kits, wood kits, any pre-WW1 car.

I'll start with my B&O hopper cars. May railroad interchanges witht eh B&O at Wilmington, DE and so would have substanial soft coal business. To support that I needed some B&O coal cars. There is a picture of a B&O hopper in White's book. Looking through the 1900, 1905 ORER's I found about 5000 cars of those same general dimensions.

I took a Life-Like twin hopper, the cheapy, old Varney style and sanded off the ribs and all details. All the ladders were cut off, leaving only the end sill and corner posts.

I then cut 4 ft out of the center of the car to shorten it to 30 ft. The exterior was covered with .020x 1/8" styrene strips. End sills were added from 1/8" square styrene. A hopper bottom was cut from scribed siding and the hoppers were covered with scale 2x8 styrene.

The side posts were made with Tichy stake pockets and scale 4x4 styrene. A walk way was added with strip styrene between the side stakes and then a strip ove the top of the stakes. Grab irons were added from brass wire.

There is the model ready for paint:

Doug, the layout in the background is the Sundance Central. I’m one of the original two. Thanks Nevin, I’ll do that later on.

Thanks Håkan and George, they're Fn3 91:20.3) and they run on the Sundance Central. I really get into the down and decrepit look, that's what I love about narrow gauge railroading.

I don’t know if these qualify for this thread as Early Rail Cars since they’re not of any particular road name or car. They’re just cars I built because I like funky one-of-a-kind rolling stock. The siding on both cars is made with wood coffee stirrers, one of my favorite materials.

The caboose actually started out to become Ferrocarril & Mexicano number 151. But I made a modification to the sliding doors to put them on the outside instead of the inside otherwise its pretty close to the original. I liked the fact it didn’t have any end platforms.









The combine was a just because I wanted a combine. I had a set of wooden disconnects lying around for years and I decided to build the combine with the wood trucks to make it more interesting. I added the roof walk, air tank and wind scoop for more one of a kind character.

It's the old 5 piece, with the "Heinz Apple Butter" decals. I'll probably do it in all boxcar red, I haven't decided which paint scheme yet.

Very nice. I recieved two Silver Crash car kits, a 34 ft box and Canda Car Co. stock car (which looks like a particularly challenging kit.)

Westerfield kits always challenge me to do complete brake rigging:

This kit comes with outside brake hangers, but I need to get the correct swing-motion trucks first. (They're on order :-). Once I get the trucks on them and make sure coupler height is still correct with the new trucks, this will get added to the ever-increasing airbrush queue.
