Jaime of photography fame is making nice progress on Yejudah's on the other forum ( I am also posting on that thread) and the reporting of same is a fine tutorial for folks learning how to cope with craftman kits - I appreciate his detailing of the trials and tribulations as he encounters them. And with the other builds by Karl (postalkarl) and David (Kot2b) sure makes it easy for me to coast right in with my build.

Got the kit yesterday and did the customary rummaging of the contents - all castings are in tact and the usual parts are present. Scanned the contents of the instructions up to #3 and here I am. One point - George has you measure the quarter of an inch spacing for the brace and I feel a much better way is to use a spacer and an angle thingie. Here is a shot of the job after applying the glued braces, triple checking for alignment and spacing and test fit while epoxy is setting. Spot on and easy. Now to decide to paint first, or glue together first - hum?

Anyone else want to jump in and build with me - the water is fine! lol

Really nice job on that. I bet the module for the Expo will be just as good also.

Thanks Dave. I hope to get finished with Yehuda's this month so I can get to working on The EXPO module exclusively.

Thanks Jerry,

Currently I'm playing around with how to set up everything. Here is a test shot.

Progressing slowly.

I've not given up. I'm pressing on.

Am I 60% done yet, Elliot?

Later.

Jaime, the diorama is coming along very well indeed. I have to say that this kit is growing on me as I see what others are doing with it.

Thanks Simon.

When I first saw what Karl S. did with his when he first got it I knew I had to build one. I saw on the FSM website that the kit is now sold out.

A very nice job. I think gravel would be a better choice. Just my 2 cents.

I believe you are right Jerry. I need to order some. I was going to put an order with Arizona Rock and Mineral for some soil. Any suggestions?

Add the track.

Back to step 25; add the track.

I wanted to hand lay the track on my diorama. I've never hand laid track and this seemed like a good excuse to learn. So, I bought a jig from Fast Tracks and some code 55 rail. I soldered some PC Board Ties to the rail using the jig and came up with this assembly.

The jig from Fast Tracks is not dual gauged. So I had to solder a third rail outside the jig. Once I had that done I glued down the assembly to the diorama base using canopy glue. Wouldn't you know, it held in place fine.

I then spiked wooden ties I stained with alcohol and India ink stain.

George Sellios suggests using dirt and cinders for the track's ballast. So I did that.

Once I had the track ballasted I began to add the wood buildings around it.

The red shed by the coal shed and the weight scale is a freebie from Stella Scale Models. It was handed out by Jim Harr at either CSS 2008 or CSS 2009. I don't recall. Anyway, I wanted to use it as a weight scale house since my weight scale is going to still be in use as opposed to how George Sellios suggests in the kit's instructions.

The areas on the diorama base without dirt may get gravel or concrete. I have not decided that yet.

Later.

Good start on the landscape. Is there another picture to a little more of it?

I'm sure it will be good you've done a great job so far on the building.

Jerry

Thanks Jerry.

Here is an overview of what I've done so far with the landscape:

The track on the photo is just there to give me an idea of what I'm working with. I hope to hand lay the track in the diorama. Also, those trees were there for the same purpose as the track, to give me an idea of what I'm working with. I'm not very good at visualizing all of this in my head so I need to mock it up to help me out.

Jaime
